Midfield of Arteta, Santi, Ozil, Ramsey, Wilshere? Cardiff pre-match.

I think it is brilliant there are now two Welsh football clubs in the PL, and both Swansea and Cardiff appear to have the management capability and infrastructure to make their stay in the top division a long one, which is great.

It just makes me think what the PL would be like if we had Scottish clubs taking part as well… it would be great away games for Arsenal against the likes of Celtic and Rangers, or the beautifully named Inverness Caledonian Thistle. I’d love it!

Happy Saint Andrew’s Day to all Scottish Gooners. Although it will a be subdued day, no doubt, after last night’s horrible accident in Glasgow.

Today’s game against the Bluebirds is not a potential banana-skin. We know damn well we can slip up at the Cardiff City stadium, and only if and when we put our best team on the pitch and treat it as a cup final, will we get out of it with three points today. And that would mean, TOTL with a luvverly gap of seven points with Pool and Oilers till Sunday at least.

There is a great opportunity for Arsenal to push on now and increase our lead before Christmas, and I want to see a determined, hard working team that does not take anything for granted. With the likes of Mertesacker, Koz, Flamini, Sagna, Ozil, Giroud, Ramsey, Gibbs and Wilshere in the team, there is little risk we will not approach the game like a cup final; and this, in my view, is what makes us different from most of our main competitors for the title.

Luckily the Manc clubs have already dropped points at the Cardiff City stadium as to clearly point out to us the gigantic banana-skin the Welsh capital is presenting to us. Cardiff City will have nothing to lose and be full of confidence today –  they will play with opportunism and with an excited crowd behind them. So we need to show character and togetherness, play at a high tempo and with discipline in midfield and at the back. And to use another cliché, take our chances when they are presented to us.

How are we going to line up?

Cardiff v Arsenal

I reckon this will be the team today. A good mix of talent, grit, hunger and attitude.

  1. VCC says:

I would keep Monreal at left back.

Is TPIG injured? ~Szezney ????? why have you got Fabianski in goal?

  2. Dylan says:

Great post TA. I can’t tell who safe handski is, but if that’s Fabianski I don’t even want to watch the game. 😉 Haha, maybe time for our big furry Italian to get his debut? 😉

  3. TotalArsenal says:

It’s TPIG – it should read Safe Handsny.

VCC – would be happy with Nacho as well, but I reckon Gibbser is back today.

  4. VCC says:

I’m a tad nervous about todays game. If we do not start on the front foot and assert our superior skill from the off we could get caught out by their enthusiasm.

If Gibbs is not 100%, I would start with Monreal.

Walcott to come on after 70 mins.

  5. Ugh, no early match this morning for us sleepless sorts…

Nice one ToTL… Who (exactly) are you picking for MF? The title says Arteta, the team sheet says Flame…

For me, it’s time to see what Theo can do with a longer outing, though I can also see the manager waiting for the Hull match. Cardiff ran very hard against ManU so I think Theo’s pace (if they over-commit) could really hurt them. That might be an argument for keeping it tight and bringing him on for the last 20-30 mins, however… I’ll trust the manager on this one… I do expect rotation, but more in the home matches than in this one…

My big hope is that the Cardiff fans can salute the return of Ramsey and have a chance to see what he’s done for us. When the fixtures came out they had to fear consecutive home matches with United and Arsenal. Now that they got something from United it may be easier to play well and take a moral victory (and some playing lessons…) into their midweek at Stoke City.

I’ve been super busy (cooking/hosting guests for the holiday) so I missed out on the last two threads. It’s really nice Milo, that you came on and shared your story. It sounds like you’re doing (really) well and making good choices (given the circumstances) as well as allowing people to share (and help…) in your tough time. Keep it up… Also, I thought you made an EXCELLENT point about rotating for the bigger (league) matches. Is that what AW did for the United match?…Was it a Venger-Virus (after all…) that hit the squad? I’m kidding of course, but 3 points is 3 points no matter where you get them… and those bigger matches can be great opportunities for players suddenly getting a call. The fans live from match to match but the manager knows that all outcomes are possible and the reaction is almost as important as the result. Living to fight another day and learning from defeat is key… Maybe Cardiff can choose to do just that today! 😀 …

So, I think personal talk–and it doesn’t have to all be puffing oneself up–is completely appropriate here on an Arsenal (or any other) blog (and, as such, I’m extremely pleased to have landed here on BKesque…) so, on a similar note, thanks cockie for showing some of your landscape out there. Some of my people walked “our” trails again yesterday and the light was sooo much better than the poor photos I included earlier…(Snow next week, or so they say…) Your area looks fantastic… and I appreciate the sharing…as long as nobody leaves any (blue) fur behind… 😆

Anyhow, line-ups out soon, I hope… Anybody around for a little GDC (game day chat)?…

    Go on…

  6. Gerry says:

TA – Yep, one for the good guys to win I reckon.

I have not seen anything of Cardiff playing so I am not sure how much of a threat they will be?

I am like VCC, probably think Monreal might keep that spot, just to keep Gibbs sharp? I would favour Walcott as a starter too, if it is to be an open game? But that would probably be at Santi’s expense, as neither Jack or Aaron are likely options? Mesult even less so?

That would be just the one change from last time, which is how we want to manage things.

As long as Rosi and Gnabry are on the bench for the ‘tactical’ subs, it should be fine.

Confidence, continuity, and creative play will win through.

Enjoy the match. I shall listen, and hopefully see it tomorrow.

  7. JM says:

Arsenal team to play Cardiff City: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Arteta, Wilshere, Ramsey, Ozil, Cazorla, Giroud

Subs: Fabianski, Vermaelen, Monreal, Rosicky, Flamini, Walcott, Gnabry

  8. 17highburyterrace says:

So, TA called it…in the title at least… 😉 😀

I like it…It will be a slower match than their match with United which was frenetic from the kick-off… Cardiff might’ve won that one if Rooney had gotten sent off (after 8 mins)…

If we could win this two-nil that would make three in a row…and a habit I could enjoy…

  9. TotalArsenal says:

    Apologies for messy prematch 🙂

Arteta start makes sense, but I expected Flame to start. My subconscious was obviously active when I wrote the title 😉

Prematch reports are not my favourite thing to do and if there is a volunteer out there to do them with Oz in future (in tandem) then make yourself known Gooner! 🙂

  10. Dylan says:

Sad to not see Gnabry start. Hopefully can play a role in this game. Scored a goal against Swansea, surely he can do it against their rivals! 😉

  11. Kaboom says:

God, TA u gave the all 11 players nickname each!!

  12. alexgunners says:

    Evening guys.

    Great shot by Jack, unlucky

  13. 17highburyterrace says:

In theory I could do an occasional match preview (or report) but it hurts being in the different time zone…and I could never attempt to compete with Oz… Also, the weekend tends to be my “busy” time… 😉

    I nominate Gerry or Bond 😯 …

Seemed like a nice welcome for AR-16 but hard to tell on the telly… Commentators warning about Cardiff set-pieces…

  14. 17highburyterrace says:

Whoa Alex, looks like you’re a couple of mins ahead of me…

    How’s Bella?

  15. alexgunners says:

    Hi 17ht,

    How are you?

I guess ill let you know if we score since i am ahead of you by a couple of mins.

Bella is great, she is next to me sleeping keeping me company for the match

  16. 17highburyterrace says:

Good start here, unlucky to not be a goal up…I don’t think Ozil has a touch until 4 mins in, but then leads the counter… Too much looking up and he’s caught from behind…

  17. alexgunners says:

Very nasty clash of heads, Per looks like he is in trouble

  18. 17highburyterrace says:

I’m fine except for overeating at the holiday and a bit of lost sleep…3 pm kickoff is what time for you? I got pretty good at changing my boy almost in my sleep (and then handing him off for feeding…)

    Mertesacker dinged…

  19. 17highburyterrace says:

Friendly fire from Sagna…and a decent chance while we’re down to 10…Sir Chez acts cool but he was beaten…

  20. alexgunners says:

it is a 2am game here in Melbourne.
BTW, nothing wrong with overeating. Food is one of those things that should be enjoyed regardless of the occasion.

  21. oz gunner says:

cheers TA. Sorry i couldn’t step up this week gents.

god when i first clicked on I thought it was a replay from our match against Marseille

  22. alexgunners says:

    WTF was Giroud thinking

  23. 17highburyterrace says:

    2 am is rough…Later starts even worse…But then I’m an early riser…

    Giroud–Play to the whistle!!!! Geezus…

  24. 17highburyterrace says:

He’s gonna get pulled early for that one…Mental error…

    Hey Oz…

  25. oz gunner says:

bloody giroud, play until you hear the whistle

  26. 17highburyterrace says:

Anybody read lips, in French…Wenger looks pissed (as in angry…)

    Cardiff corner…second ball = foul…

  27. oz gunner says:

Hey 17 and alex. Hope all is well with you both

  28. 17highburyterrace says:

Giroud looks awake now…and we’re playing some good ball… Great replay footage shows how the angle fooled the linesman…Giroud too honest…

  29. alexgunners says:

    Hi Oz,

All will be great when we score a couple. How have you been?

  30. oz gunner says:

same here Alex. Not sure why but haven’t had a good feeling about this one all week.

  31. alexgunners says:

it just seems to be a tricky fixture but hopefully we can break them down

  32. 17highburyterrace says:

I’m very confident…we’re playing some beautiful football…Great Ozil to Cazorla and a goal saving block…They can’t back off us and they can’t come at us…

On the other hand I’d feel better if Giroud had played on and Jack’s shot had been 2 inches to the right…

  33. alexgunners says:

    Great header

  34. oz gunner says:

    Ramsey does it again!!!!!!

  35. 17highburyterrace says:

Geez…Mert lack of pace but Kos cleans up…

  36. 17highburyterrace says:

Haha you guys are way ahead of me…Haven’t seen it yet…

  37. alexgunners says:

    Great cross by Ozil

  38. oz gunner says:

that was a ripper pass and a ripper finish. Looked simple but both brilliant efforts

  39. alexgunners says:

Sorry but at least it is some good news

  40. 17highburyterrace says:

    There it is…

Mucho Santi to get the move going, but what a pass to a perfect run…No celebration…

  41. 17highburyterrace says:

Hey…I enjoy good news! No worries, eh…

  42. oz gunner says:

  43. alexgunners says:

we seem to be all over the place when we are defending

  44. 17highburyterrace says:

Don’t like the sound of phew (but it beats other things…) Referring to the yellow on Gibbs? Nope, it was the poor defense on the FK…

Yeah 2-nil is the number we need…

  45. alcide says:

Hi guys, Rambo is really something… “Watching” the game on Bergkampesque on my iPod… Keep the news coming 🙂

  46. alexgunners says:

a second goal would definitely be welcome right now. Just seems a little scrappy

  47. alexgunners says:

Crazy refereeing, Sagna brought down, should have a free kick but nothing given

  48. 17highburyterrace says:

Hey Alcide…I’m so far behind that I’m watching the Aussies myself…I think we’re playing some very nice football but they look dangerous with set piece deliveries…

  49. 17highburyterrace says:

Ramsey might’ve done better and that call on Sagna was poor…Lucky that Giroud called his own offside earlier (same linesman)…

  50. alexgunners says:

Half time, we need to close this game off.
Should at least be 2-0 up but also need to defend a little better

  51. alexgunners says:

A big positive so far has been Ozil’s work rate. He has been rather flat lately but he is definitely giving us more options

  52. 17highburyterrace says:

1 nil is always twitchy but we looked dominant…PM4 looked a little off after getting knocked in the mouth… The pass and header were ridiculously good…

Sometimes they catch up with the feed at HT… So (quick) coffees to pull for my guests…

  53. alcide says:

Thanks for the comments! Frustrated as hell, famn kids activities

  54. James Bond says:

we need a tactical change before it gets a bitch twitchy time.

what was Giroud thinking on the off side one, i wonder.

  55. 17highburyterrace says:

Haha…I’m a little out of it and the delay was at my end…Poor sleep from over-eating (I cooked for my people a day late…)

    2nd half on…

  56. alexgunners says:

So close cleared off the line

  57. James Bond says:

giroud cleared off the line, should have scored there !!! bbuger

  58. James Bond says:

when was the last time Giroud smashed one in ?

that was the time to do it there, instead of going for placement (Straight at the defender in goal) arghhhhh

come on boys, come on – let’s run riot here and win by a big big margin !!!

  59. 17highburyterrace says:

Settle now James… You don’t come off as cool as your namesake when you make such demands… 😉

  60. alexgunners says:

This is the kind of game we can smash a few in but if we are not careful we will concede one.

    Good save by Chezza

  61. James Bond says:

nice one Sczny , after gibbs switched off.

  62. 17highburyterrace says:

    Lucky there…Whittingham usually hits them…

  63. alexgunners says:

they are piling on the pressure now

  64. Xavier says:

    Sczceny though!!! Awesome save!

  65. Xavier says:

We’ll catch them on the break.

  66. 17highburyterrace says:

Gibbs is having a bit of tough outing…Just need to weather this period of belief… and hurt them on the break…

  67. James Bond says:

this is the game to win by a 3/4 goal margin i reckon and we are playing well and creating chances, we need to let them come out more instead of parking the bus and voila.

    agreed @ Alex

  68. 17highburyterrace says:

I dunno James…I get as much satisfaction from a 1-nil (on the road, esp.) as the 7-3 I attended last season (vs. Newcastle…) I’m still confident but I understand the twitch…

  69. oz gunner says:

agree with X-man, i think we’ll catch them out on the break

  70. James Bond says:

    indeed @ 17HT

how was that not a booking for fouling Arteta, argh

  71. 17highburyterrace says:

Giroud off (for Theo) sooner than later after the mental error in the first period…

Who IS this little fat fellow (Medel)? Ah, de Chile…Los de las ligas menores en los americas son los mas peores…

  72. James Bond says:

that was a corner, ffs @ the ref

  73. alexgunners says:

How the hell was that not a corner???
    Poor decision

  74. alexgunners says:

They do have one of the worst leagues around

  75. 17highburyterrace says:

Yeah, Ref is a super-homer… and linesman is useless… Odemwingie is dangerous…

We need to show confidence with the subs sooner than later given the schedule of matches…

  76. James Bond says:

i would take off santiago/jw and bring on theo

  77. 17highburyterrace says:

Haha Alex…be gentle with my crap Spanish…

  78. James Bond says:

even taking off ozil for theo might not be such a bad idea, JW can play as the no.10

  79. alexgunners says:

I don’t speak spanish, just understand it. My wife is Chilean and I make sure she remembers how crap they are

  80. alexgunners says:

    Poor shot by Santi.
    Confidence is low

  81. 17highburyterrace says:

Ref just not protecting us at all…Might need the Flam-man soon for a little payback…

  82. James Bond says:

    getting a bitch twitchy now…

  83. 17highburyterrace says:

At least he doesn’t buy the Odemwingie dive…

Great D from Arteta but Gibbs backs off the 50-50…

    C’mon fellas…

  84. James Bond says:

gibbs isn’t having the bestest of games , tbh

  85. alexgunners says:

    C’mon guys,
I am running out of finger nails. Let’s get that all important 2nd goal

  86. oz gunner says:

    need an injection of pace

  87. James Bond says:

honestly @ AW – where are the subs ?

  88. 17highburyterrace says:

Giroud too slow…Time for some subs, I think, but I’m not the manager…

Does Noone (no one) count as a sub? 😀

  89. 17highburyterrace says:

Matt-Two Fla-min-i….We got him in on a free!!!

  90. James Bond says:

    kill me

    he is bringing on Flamini

    settling for a 0-1 then ?

take off ozil and bring on Theo, move JW to the center – sorted

  91. oz gunner says:

    well done szcz

  92. 17highburyterrace says:

Sir Chesney…Not caught dreaming despite the new contract…

  93. James Bond says:

not liking this substitution at all.

  94. oz gunner says:

haha 17, i was thinking the same. They brought on a no-one

  95. wenger's coat says:

a good decision to sub Cazorla. didn’t look sharp and lost possession. We look trired. I would bring Walcott to stretch them a bit

  96. alexgunners says:

We have been rattled, cannot retain possession for periods and the cohesion has gone.

  97. James Bond says:

this ref is a right knob, get out of here

  98. 17highburyterrace says:

Ref finally calls one (a good one) on Mikel…What a pro…Linesman wakes up too…

  99. James Bond says:

beginning to get a bit more bitch twitchy now…

  100. 17highburyterrace says:

JW out and Nacho in…That’s a good call…

  101. James Bond says:

another defensive sub, nacho for JW

    erm, ok

keep warming the bench then Theo, no worries

  102. James Bond says:

ramsey let’s one rip from a distance – beautiful to see

come on lads, keep going now, nearly there !!!

  103. wenger's coat says:

Once you see Monreal come on it means Wenger has well and truly shut up shop, risky with 1 nil

  104. 17highburyterrace says:

    There’s your long shot, James…

As long as you don’t go a bitch, bitch twitchy I will indulge you… 😉

  105. wenger's coat says:

Cardiff will be looking for free kicks now

  106. 17highburyterrace says:

Dive there…FK but too far to take directly…

  107. James Bond says:

ok, time to keep possession and waste time now folks – take it a bit easy with the long range shots now, ha

  108. James Bond says:

Nacho can score a goal, not entirely a defensive one that

  109. oz gunner says:

    Flamini I love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  110. 17highburyterrace says:

Another long shot…We could’ve used the time if continuation hadn’t been played…

Bad football there from Cardiff and Mikel says “not the face, please not the face”

  111. alexgunners says:

    HELL YEAH!!!!!!!

  112. James Bond says:

  113. 17highburyterrace says:

    All Ozil, once again…

  114. James Bond says:

and that is how you smash them in @ Giroud – learn learn learn !!! 🙂

  115. wenger's coat says:

Wow. what a pass from Ozil . unbelievable . that pass worth about 20 millions alone

  116. 17highburyterrace says:

Mix up between Per and Sir Chez…

Theo on for a quick 3rd?…

Arteta takes the yellow to save Mikel from a 2nd…

  117. alexgunners says:

whats the point of this substitution??????
Theo in on the 90th minute,

  118. James Bond says:

    job well done @ Ozil

the king of Assists is back with a bang !!!

  119. 17highburyterrace says:

Messy, I think, could walk slower there… 😀

    C’mon Theo, get a quickie…

  120. James Bond says:

4 minutes to go @ Alex

    theo can score us a 3rd 😉

  121. 17highburyterrace says:

    OR AN ASSIST!!!!

  122. oz gunner says:

Fucking bang!!!!!! Now that’s a break!!!

  123. alexgunners says:

    A theo assist instead

  124. 17highburyterrace says:

    Rambo!!!! So nice…

  125. wenger's coat says:

Walcott caused havoc in few minutes

  126. 17highburyterrace says:

Wow…but for the twitchy fellas this has been a real display… and even those guys got their scoreline… 😉

  127. James Bond says:

    start the engine time !!!

    wooooooo00000000000000000t woooooooooooooooooo0000000000000t w000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000t !!!

  128. James Bond says:

the visionary gets another one bang on !!!

so well chuffed, 3-4 goals margins is what we should be winning against vs hull as well, come on boys !!!

Wenger – OUT of this world , ha

  129. alexgunners says:

how right you were, that we did need the injection of pace.

  130. James Bond says:

    oh no, actually i went for 1-3 , didn’t i ?

well done to Szny as well, good good goooooooooooooooo !!!

  131. 17highburyterrace says:

3 clean sheets won’t be the story but Sir Chez has done well since he got his contract…

Ramsey–what a return to his home club and sublime placement on both goals. Ozil made our first two unmissable, however…

Nice to see Flam continue his run and get it on platter…

That match was tougher because of the blind, let-em-play ref…

  132. proudgooner says:

What a great result and performance by Rambo again. Plus how is how you celebrate goals against your old club, pure class.

  133. James Bond says:

GOAL – Cardiff 0-3 Arsenal – Aaron Ramsey (90 mins)
What scenes. Theo Walcott breaks away on the counter, lays it back for Aaron Ramsey who hammers a shot into the top corner. The Cardiff crowd serenade him ‘there’s only one Aaron Ramsey’ and he responds with the Cardiff ‘Ayatollah’ celebration. A love-in.

    i’m speechless…

  134. Evening BK Bandits 😆

    Have I missed anything ?.

    What`s….”the Cardiff `Ayatollah` celebration” ?.

I love reading through the comments after a relaxing time behind the sofa, especially when Tarzan gets attacked by his own loin cloth when Flamini comes on and then scores, it`s great reading !. hahaha

As for you guys complaining you cant do a Pre-Match because of different time zones etc`, think of me and Fozzie !. I`m in a parallel universe and he`s not of this planet !. I`m sure he has been extradited back to Mordor….the fcuking Cadbury`s Fruit and Nut case !. hahaha

  135. It`s OK JB !. Don’t go swinging from any trees, I have found out about the “Ayatollah celebration” !.

  136. proudgooner says:

Touching back on the post topic, our midfield again proves it is awesome with now even Flemini smashing the ball in the onion bag goals are just flooding in from midfield 🙂

  137. 1tourettesgooner says:

Draxler !….what a great Bond villain name !.

  138. proudgooner says:

newcastle match or reals? i think i will have a look at real, with out ronaldo.

  139. proudgooner says:

I also think if you look at Evertons league position and team they are a better team now without Moyes, i think Roberto is a better manager the point is manure have got a very average manger and they will sink under him ha ha ha ha

  140. proudgooner says:

a chance to take a good look at Benz for Real.

  141. proudgooner says:

Good 1 Cockie M and so true, if only we have that game against them again. If we had won that game we would now be 16 points ahead of them, ohh how i would love that.

  142. James Bond says:

ah, this is what Gerry and you like to do, go through the comments in live game situations and then use them against me, it’s like an army of 2 against me, ha

i’m not sure, if your link tells us something we didn’t already know about the D 🙂 🙂 🙂

but yes, it’s clear that lad often visits BK and steals our thunder, ha

PS: Fozzie B – where art thou

  143. proudgooner says:

    Bale scores for Real 1 – 0

  144. proudgooner says:

    Benz scores Bale assist 2-0

  145. So what do we want tomorrow from the Spud game ?.
My head says Spuds, so the gap between us and the perennial challengers is 10 points !.
My heart is very uncomfortable with any notion of a Spud win !.
So, a draw with plenty of injuries and sending offs would be best !.
    Make it so, Dennis !.

  146. James Bond says:

a draw between the spuds and the scums be – perfecto, no ?

yep, 1 goal so far for Bale and 1 Assist – worth every penny @ stares at TA.

  147. Shame Lord Wenger ignored Liam Brady`s advise…..Bale could have been an Arsenal supporting legend !. Instead of caressing your loin cloth in his roll as Cheeta !.

Beautiful women begging for it , but you prefer French kissing a chimp and we think Fozzie has a screw loose !. hahaha

  148. James Bond says:

absafcukinglutely – he scores another one, so that’s 2 goals and 1 assist = Ronaldo on his way out of RM in the summer

    you heard it here first.

  149. James Bond says:

    on a different topic, completely

a nice little tussle (tension) beginning to develop between Jose and Lukaku –

apparently, Lukaku put in a request to leave, which was turned down once but eventually he forced it through and Jose had to let him leave…

the thinking behind is was that he didn’t want to compete with Torres, Eto, Ba for a starting place…

if they buy a striker in january or summer, maybe the lad could be persuaded to join Arsenal in the summer by putting in a written transfer request ?

he be the perfect signing and worth it for £25-30 Million.

  150. proudgooner says:

bale hat-trick, no ron and bale excells

  151. James Bond says:

the first of many many more to come @ PG

  152. TotalArsenal says:

Excellent win today and another clean sheet! Very impressive performance and looking fwd to highlights later on. Three goals from central midfielders again….. This team will go places this season.

  153. TotalArsenal says:

Bale is acclimatising really well, which is impressive. Was it worth £100m? Time will tell. It’s a two team league and they are third…. Mmmmm…

  154. James Bond says:

the players you dislike or don’t rate, you never really change your opinion about them, regardless of their performance, do you @ TA

Santiago is paying for not having a pre-season with us.

  155. TotalArsenal says:

    Rubbish JB

When did I ever say I don’t rate him?

  156. James Bond says:

you didn’t think he was worth 30-35 million or in that bracket – let alone be sold for 100 mills ?

during our encounters on bale, the impression i got was rather clear – you didn’t think he was an all-round footballer worth the amount being quoted at the time.

the way you said ” in a 2 team league they are 3rd ” was rather unfair, considering he’s missed most of the season due to injury and not playing ? hence not much he could do about their league standing ?

  157. geoffchase says:

Boys boys (@stares at JB and TA),

Don’t make me revoke your desserts for a week!! 😛

As for your debate. An economist would say, if X payed 100m for Y, then by definition he was worth it. That of course doesn’t get into whether he was a smart buy.

    My take:

    A. RM will have a hard time finding goals for both CR and Bale when both are fully there. They didn’t need another galactic scorer, they needed to keep their creator.

    JGC Score, not too bright

    B. Spurs got 100m for one player and proceeded to spend the lot of it or nearly so. Somehow despite the look on paper 100M of scorers and creators for one scorer equals less goals then before.

JGC Score, somewhere between it’s a mystery and WTF?!?! Or hey, well it’s Spurs…

    C. Arsenal, only here as it’s an arsenal blog and the soccer world revolves around them! right? Anyway, Arsenal got Ozil pretty much as a result. More assists and creation for same other players equals more goals and wins. Even on his off days…

JGC Score, the wily B’rer Rabbit wins again!! 🙂

The Professor hath spoken, now quieten you too, you’re disrupting my chi!! 😛

    Cheery-eery-eery-ooooos — jgc 🙂

  158. James Bond says:

he he, that’s me told then by the Professor !

agreed, we shouldn’t care what happens outside of Arsenal, it’s all PG’s fault – let’s all blame him

shakes hands with TA and looks forward to the next post (Dylan, don’t you have like holidays now from school 😉

  159. TotalArsenal says:

NO JB, I thought he was worth around £30-35m but not more, and I still think that. You on the other hand totally overrate him for some reason and felt the need to make a reference to me tonight because he had a good evening.

I merely try to help you see things in perspective. He is good not great, at least not great yet, and never worth that money. Once Ronaldo goes the pressure is on his shoulders and then we’ll see how good he is..

  160. James Bond says:

he’s been having a lot of good evenings lately and every time he does, i have a little chuckle and give you those stares, not sure why you got a bit worked up about it tonight though.

you can do the same to me, whenever Jovetic has a good evening or plenty of them, i don’t mind 🙂

you can even have a chuckle and remind me how good Sczny was today 😉 i’m sure if you won’t then Gerry will, ha

point well made about Ronaldo going and then us seeing how he can handles it all.

just watched motd and them lot are still not convinced @ ahahahahhahahahahahahahaha

i keep hearing them say the same thing over and over again, the big boys, man city and chelsea

we will kick Man city’s ass – no worries

    just fcuking bring it !!!

  161. TotalArsenal says:

OK JB – I can see where you are coming from and fair enough. 🙂

Jovetic would be a great addition to our team still, and it is a real shame we don’t see much of him at the Northern Oilers as yet. What a waste of talent and money it seems. But no surprise there.

MoTD is just hilarious: the ‘pundits’ always chose the middle road at the start of the season and will only change their mind once everybody else has done it. I usually mute the comments section or fast forward to the next game.

  162. James Bond says:

i tend to listen to their comments and biased opinions with more interest actually and i thank them every time they have something negative to say about us, why ? because it makes AW’s job so much more easier – he doesn’t need to motivate his players as all he needs to do is to tell them to watch motd later tonight , that the weekly dose of motivation sorted, ha

Michael the bench warmer still reckons we will finish 5th – cheers Owen.

Jovetic , he can always do a lukaku and go out on loan in January.

  163. James Bond says:

Everton are looking pretty impressive under Martinez, we play them on sunday, i’m expecting our toughest game of the season against them ! and not man city ( call me crazy ?

  164. My new Isco…..Deulofeu !…..still looking good and the other young one I rate….Barkley, only on the bench !. Indeed, Everton will be a tough nut to crack !.
Martinez has them playing better and looking more dangerous than Moyes !.
Good sign that a team is starting to be taken serious, is when I don’t like them anymore !. Everton, a once likeable team who I shall despise unless we beat them !. hahaha

  165. TotalArsenal says:

Agreed on motd being a great motivator for the team, JB. It helps keeping us focused and OGAATly 🙂

  166. geoffchase says:

    So TA and JB

Might we get Jovetic in January? Say 20m and a seat warmer so Pellegeini doesn’t know he’s gone? Only half kidding….

Economically, and to split hairs academically, when we say XX is worth YY million we are saying it in a context of what we would pay or think someone would pay. Value is always determined by the successful bidder, and is thus a changing feast depending in those bidders and their needs.

This is exactly why the Oilers truly skew markets. They pay huge amounts for players who add little, though they do take away from others the opportunity do those players. Succinctly they pay well well above contextual value.

The ore end of this coin is imagine an auction of Cavani by Sunderland and Palace. On their revenues he’d go for something like 15-20M which is well under his value on a more open market of more teams.

So, context serves all and defines value… No fixed thing like for a commodity like gold that moves waaaay more efficiently, in an economic sense, due to so many buyers and sellers…

Just some thoughts to cheer you along in your debates…

    Cheers — jgc

So onto Arsenal matters… Who do you reckon will score a Brace in our next game? We’ve had someone score a brace in the last 3 games I think. (Giroud, Wilshere, Ramsey)

Cheers Totes !. I accidently left my computer on last night and have woken up to 6 inches of snow on my keyboard !. 👿

  170. TotalArsenal says:

Good question Xavier: is it time for Santi?

Geoff, I measure value of players in comparison to others…… £80m? You are having a laugh!

TCM what the hell ate you on about

  171. Have you not got snow falling at the top of the page !……….do you get it now !…….or do I still have to explain my wit !……or may be an arse rape by Frosty the Snowman will get your mind into gear !. hahaha

  172. VCC says:

  173. TotalArsenal says:

Ahhh I am with you now, Cockie Nutbum… 😆

  174. Vics

Playing with his snow balls is one thing , but come on……Iced Tea Bagging !. hahaha

What a great result 2-2, just what the Doctor ordered !. Spuds 10 points behind and Manscum points behind !.

    6 mile run beckons !.

  175. Xavier says:

TA Yeah… Maybe its Santi’s turn. My gut feeling is Walcott though.

  176. TotalArsenal says:

Maybe we’ll see a double brace, Xavier 😛

  177. Xavier says:

    THAT would be something!!!

  178. To Hull and back for the Bindippers !.

Come on Swansea and Southampton !.

  179. Gerry says:

Afternoon all – Why were you so worried about Cardiff then?

Having now watched the match I can now comment.

I spotted a few incidental things happening since Wilshere starts, nominally, on the right.

In this game, where they have progressed a little more with the ‘balance’ – My Hungarian wind-surfing tutor kept telling me .. It’s all to do with the balance’, and he is right. – and it is quite subtle: My take on it:

In attack we used to have Santi on the left, Wilshere B2B down the middle, and Ramsey on the right – Simplified, of course. – Then we get SQ Ozil. Again, nominally central, but on a free rein. So Wilshere would bumped into Santi when he came inside, and Ramsey on the right restricted him, and so it did not work terribly well?

Yesterday I noted that with Wilshere linking with Sagna some of the time. Ramsey down the left some of the time, doing his running from deep, so when Santi moves inside He has both Ramsey and Gibbs to play down that, whilst Ozil has Wilshere and Sagn to play to down the right. Now the interchange between then is what makes it hard for markers to follow.

Ozil goes to the left, Ramsey, not Santi, goes right, but if Wilshere goes central, then Santi goes wider right. It is all done very efficiently usually.

The net result of both wings sharing Ozil some of the time, balance of attacking is assured. So what has been Santi’s blind spot of not using Gibbs is solved because he is not paying the one-two with Gibbs, he leaves the to Ozil or Ramsey to do.

It is a win win situation, with that particular line up. Walcott throws some thing else into the mix, as he tends to stay wide right in the early part of an attack. Which is why I don’t think we will see that trio, plus Walcott very often?

It was also noticeable that Wilshere and Ramsey worked the defensive partnership with Arteta very well too

But the outstanding pair has to be the Per-Kos symbiosis. Unless he is advancing with the ball, Kos is a yard or two behind Per across the pitch. This gives him the angle to see what is ahead of Per, and in particular, what is like to get in beyond him, so he can be ready to act as sweeper. There was one occasion today when he made a tackle in Sagna’s right back position, to give an idea of the ground he covers?
On the Per side of things you have the calming control of the BFG keeping it all very tidy.
Btw – That BFG should now read as Big Ferrous German, i.e. ‘.Iron Man’, after the knockout blow he got from Sagna? My thoughts went back to the previous post, and the two players we don’t want to lose with injuries?

Mind the funniest thing I saw was when Flamini came on, was to give the verbals as to where Arteta should go and stand, and he was only on the field two minutes… captain or no captain,,Arteta did as he was bid 😆

Add to that, the sublime stop Sir Chezzer made down to his right, when his first movement was to his left, is what is making us a hard side to beat?

Not that it was all plain sailing in that spell in the second half? That bit where both sides were giving away possession far too easily. Difficult to make subs while it was still 0-1, but may be Walcott earlier could have been an option? We cannot afford to be that casual next weekend and beyond?

Still ToTL, and an extra 2 points on a couple of them 😀

  180. TotalArsenal says:

Fabulous analysis Gerry – worthy of a post 🙂

  181. geoffchase says:

Umm, that was my point, but also relative to your needs. I.e. what would you pay for Jovetic this January? What would you pay if OG was hurt (longer term)?

Though admittedly, I think we have more coverage there then others think, I still dont want to find out! 🙂

Now what would you pay if Jovetic was the only top striker available this January?

All these affect perceived value. What someone else says I dont know.

Finally, did I say 80M?!? Not sure where that came from.. 20M for Jovetic this January was teh question, would you?? Even with OG? 😈

FWIW, I might, tho my “dream” would be someone like Benteke or Lukaku over summer, but I dont think they will be available (tho one never knows does (Ozil) one?)

    cheers — jgc

  182. VCC says:

    Gerry 16:48……….Great analysis.

I too had noticed how Flamini keeps bellowing out the orders and points to where players should cover. That’s exactly what we need in this side.

TA……As you know I am not one of the Jovetic likers. I hope Wenger has crossed him off his list. 🙂

  183. geoffchase says:

Re: Jovetic, I could live with or without him (on the fence I guess)… However, I wonder if Wenger is keen. To me:

    a. WE have Poldi, Theo who can play up front. Differently but more than well enough compared to OG. I.e. we would be a more mobile attacking team in some ways and pacier but not less potent I think.

    b. AW is always relatively shrewd in TWs (mostly). I think we are less covered at middle defender (tho Sagna can step in and TV is there).

Thus, if we buy at all in January, I suspect it might be targets of opportunity. Top calibre or seen as future such (say 20-24 years of age), yet proven enough, and available now for whatever reasons.

    cheers — jgc

  184. geoffchase says:

    TA, Gerry et al,

About 7 games back, there was concern over goals. I noted, and wrote a piece about, team defence saying it would come with time as we gelled there.

So, The Visionary (c) in me wants to go nyah nyah and point out that we have 10 clean sheets in 20 total games and that includesw 5 ina row in the league and 6 in a row over all competitions…

    like good wine!

    cheers — jgc

  185. TotalArsenal says:

    Geoff 🙂

You were also the one who said defence did not matter too much as long as we keep scoring more. And it has been the defence that has been saving our arses.

  186. geoffchase says:

And we are now tied for lowest goals against wtih Soton and second on goal difference to Man City, primarily on the basis of their 2 overkill games.

To paraphrase a golf saying that still works somewhat here, … score (lots) for show, defend for dough!

    cheers — jgc

  187. geoffchase says:

doesnt invalidate the other points I made.. I said that bit about it not mattering to soothe your troubled soul! 😀

.. While waiting for the defense to gel…

    cheers — jgc

  188. TotalArsenal says:

The £80m was for Bale not Jovetic… you are confusing me now. 😕

Wenger will only pay what he thinks a player is worth in the market. So if the price is too high he will look somewhere else. And so he should.

  189. geoffchase says:

As an aside, the table is one of 4 points and quite tight..

    4 points – separates:

    a. 1st frmo 2nd (coyg!)

    b. 3rd from 9th (very tight)

    c. 9th from 10th

Cant recall something that tight in awhile I dont think.

    interesting.. cheers — jgc

  190. TotalArsenal says:

It is all developing nicely, Geoff, and long may it continue. Like you I hope we do not have to see how we will cope with a long absence of Giroud or Mertesacker. But let’s think positive. 🙂

  191. geoffchase says:

No disagreement on the economics of it. Nor on overpaying.

IMO, RM bought the wrong “piece” and for too high a price tho they may well make it up on shrits and such (and then some).

I agree that AW always seeks teh right player at the right price, which is harder with Oilers around skewing things, sigh..

I always wonder how much is for “cover” and how much to show their wealth (the owners that is) and how much to simply deny other teams. A Celtic fan friend notes that was the Rangers way, if you want to win just buy all the strikers so no one else can score.. Of course, we see where it led!

    cheers — jgc

  192. TotalArsenal says:

You get the feeling that RM just want to be seen as the biggest and Bale was not bought for his footballer value but for status value. Barcelona got Neymar and something had to happen. I understand those mechanics but it does not make it worth the dough they paid for him in comparison to other players of similar capability. So agreed.

  193. geoffchase says:

So, a jug eared trophy wife with a flat chest?? hmmmm 😀

  194. James Bond says:

ah, do i hear Bale again 😀

    allow me to butt in,

Neymar transfer had nothing to do with RM getting Bale – they worked on getting Bale the same way they got Ronaldo – they had the wheels in motions 18-24 months prior to that.

purely speaking of inflated prices and money value, then no player is worth such an amount and in a realistic world you would have Messi go for 50 million and Ozil for 25 million (10 years ago maybe) but since the world has all turned commercial , no amount of money on a player remains definite or with a limit.

Bale is worth every penny spent on him by RM , they got the best EPL player and the best british one, according to me.

his hat-trick last night should help recover a little chunk of the 100 million euros spent on him !

another point worth noting, it wasn’t only the club wanting Bale, their supporters wanted Bale there as well – RM usually give their supporters what they want due to the politics involved – that is priceless.

just like it’s gonna be priceless when we win the double by the end of this season if not the treble or the PL alone !

  195. James Bond says:

that got a tad long, bugger

all i wanted to say was that it wasn’t a knee jerk reaction to Neymar, that Bale signing.

PS: it’s freezing in here, cheers for the festive season feel @ TA – liking the snow !!!

  196. James Bond says:

the 4 point cushion at the top just means that us drawing against man city and chelsea may not be such a bad result after all.

but i’m confident that by the time we play Man city and Chelsea, our cushion might end up being a bit more than 6 and 4 points – it could be less but let’s be honest here, Hull and Everton are the teams we should be beating.

Everton is what cost us the 3rd place last season , we only managed to take 2 points off them , if memory serves.

agreed, about it all being really tight at the moment

  197. TotalArsenal says:

sorry JB – I disagree with everything, except the last paragraph 🙂

  198. TotalArsenal says:

Have a brandy JB and cuddle up to Mrs B 😆

  199. VCC says:

    Jgc……how about Lukaku in January?

  200. geoffchase says:

I personally like Lukaku a lot. Given our mobile, pacey, precision/finesse MF (even JW falls far more there then Toure like bull) a big, threatening hold up type ST with scoring ability and “Presence!” and threat certainly fills a bill.

Defenders spend so much time dealing with them and its that much less time for the ARs and others of the world to score. IMO, that is a big part of ARs rise so far and the fact that when you lay off OG to get at AR, the opposite happens

With JW hitting some form, and btw TA he looked very good and *composed* finally in defense vs Cardiff as well as going forward the same way, and Theo coming back we should potentially be quite threatening in terms of who do you “sit on” to stop us.. ?? No one because there are so many..

So, yes, I like Lukaku … but, doubt Maureen will let him go for any reason, especiall across town..

    cheers — jgc

  201. geoffchase says:

This year I think we have what it takes to go past the Evertons of this league tho they are looking quite tough and confident just now…

    cheers — jgc

  202. proudgooner says:

We are now a 1/3 rd of the way though this season already, it has flown by. The picture has become clear to me and that is the challenge for the team is to stay in front of Chelsea and City, we all thought at the start that we should get of to a great start with all the manager changes and the fixtures at the start and so it has turnt out and very nicely too.
As it so happens we play them both this month sat 14th of Dec Man City A – 23rd Dec Chelsea H.
    Hull next on Wednesday.
As TA keeps on rightly saying OGAAT 🙂

  203. Milo says:

It seems like no matter how well we play, I am always fearful of the next match being the one that derails us!!! 😦 I think I remember the Eduardo incident too clearly, and what effect it had on us that season, in 2007/08. We were just as dominant, if not more so than this season. I will never forget that incident as long as I live, and it won’t subside even a little until we win the title again. Maybe nothing like that incident will happen this season, but a loss, when we should have won, or a tie when we should have won, will bring those memories to the forefront for me again. IF we can extend our lead at the top of the table to between 7-10 points, I think we really can do it. That will take some doing, especially this month!!! I do think we can do it though, now that I think about it 😀 I think this season we are more steady defensively than we were in 07/08, but maybe not quite as cohesive offensively, although that is coming along nicely, in patches 😀 I think we can do it, it’s just that there will be a major twist in the tail, before the end of the year, and it’s how we react to this adversity, that will tell us if we can do it or not!!

  204. Gerry says:

TA – Thanks for the compliment. Too short to be a post though?

I thought there may have been a full review in the pipeline, so I just stuck to the bits that stood out for me.

Apart from the delay in seeing the game, I quite like following the game live in audio on the ‘Player, then being able to take a broader view watching the game. Two viewings of a game would work, but then it is like ‘work’. This way I still am keen to watch throughout without getting bored because I know what is coming. Plus the good bits are better appreciated?

I sometimes wish I had that ‘Panoramic view’ on hand … I could then bore you all senseless with the minute details of build up and execution of some aspects of play?

So, nearly a full program midweek, if you missed Glic’s (with a capital ‘G’) message?

Get your UMF selections in before 6.0pm tomorrow.

  205. AFC says:

Yet another win for us! I thought we would beat cardiff but not by that margin. 🙂

We are now going into the busy Christmas period with a lot of games coming up. Just read on newsnow that we will only have 60 hours between our matches with Napoli and City. That just shows how busy we will be and how important every single one of the matches coming up will be.

It will be interesting to see how Wenger rotates in this busy period. He has come out and said that he will need to rest Ramsey at some point. Could that time be on Wednesday against Hull Tigers. 😀 I feel this would be a good time to rest Ramsey and another player like Ozil or Giroud. We should be able to get away with Arteta and Flamini in the double DM pivot and Walcott up front or Rosicky in Ozil. I would go with resting Giroud and Ramsey. I would really like to see Walcott getting service from the likes of Santi, Ozil, Wilshere, Rosicky whichever midfielders play.

Ramsey and Giroud would have then had a rest and would be recharged for this busy period. Monreal and Gibbs could also be rotated quite easily as both are quality LBs of similar quality. Maybe Vermaelen coming in for Kos in one of these matches to partner Verm could be another change which could work for upcoming matches.

It is very difficult to know who to rotate and when but I am counting on Wenger to get it right. 🙂

  206. AFC says:

Also good to see to see Liverpool lose, Manchester United and Spurs draw. 😀

Pity Chelsea and Manchester City did not drop any points. 😦

  207. Gerry says:

AFC – You are right on the need for some rotation, and I think Ramsey is a possible either here or may be Napoli?

You must know from my post a couple of days ago that I will disagree with your other choices?

Giroud is a permanent fixture, unless injured. However, this game is a good one to start with Gnabry on the right, and bring Walcott on for Giroud for the last 30 minutes … BUT, keep him wide and move Gnabs central? But that may just be my preference 😀

If thats not working out too well, bring on Jenks for Gnabry and let him run the line? Both these players need a little game time.

    TV5? Yes! With Kos? No!

In my above piece above I describe the symbiosis between Mert and Kos. They compliment each others game. No matter how many times you play them together, the Kos/TV5 pairing just doesn’t have that same connection,no matter how professional they are.

They can ‘get away with it’ on occasions, but it is a greater risk the Mert and TV5.
Remember what Milo said ‘You don’t want to be losing points to the lower sides’?

With Monreal in, although he started mid-week last time, that would be 3 changes, so it would be a bold move rest Ramsey or Ozil as well?

As you say, lets hope, beyond forced changes, AW gets it right?

  208. AFC says:

    Hi Gerry 🙂

I think you misunderstood me on the Verm rotation or I made a mistake in my writing, it’s probably the latter. 😀

I’m with you on the Verm-Kos partnership being a no go. Kos and Verm both need organisers playing beside them and I never want Wenger playing the Verm-Kos partnership unless they are our only two remaining CBs. If Verm does need to come into the team I’d like to see him partner Sagna or Mertesacker. Even those combos worry me a bit.

I’ll have to lean towards views on Giroud. He is a permanent fixture as you have already said but I would like to see him getting some rest when we are comfortably winning 2, 3 nil even if it means NB52 coming on. Same goes for Ozil and Ramsey. Why not bring on Gnabry when we are comfortably winning.

  209. TotalArsenal says:

    Morning guys 🙂

Gerry, I had no time to write MR this weekend.

And I like the sort of review you wrote yesterday.

  210. AFC says:

Could it be with the exception of a few players i.e. Wilshere, Rosicky etc, Wenger is taking it OGAAT and is not thinking about when and how to prevent the inevitable injuries likely to occur? Wenger could be waiting to deal with the injuries when they happen? So being reactive rather than proactive when it comes to rotation and injuries?

  211. geoffchase says:

You are on to my UMF pattern. I always pick Arsenal, and very often some combo of Chelsea, Spurs, Pool, City and-or Utd. I figure even if I “lose” I win! 🙂

Yes, Chelsea and City could be hurting my UMF more… 😦

    Cheers — jgc

  212. AFC says:

    Hi geoff, 🙂

Going back to your debate on Lukaku I actually think we could get him in the summer because next season Mourinho has to play him or sell him. Lukaku will not want to go out on loan for a third season in a row. By next season Ba and Eto’o might have left Chelsea but Chelsea will likely sign a SQ CF/ST meaning Lukaku will be 3rd choice behind the new CF/ST and Torres as I cannot see him leaving. If we were to put in a 30 million bid for him in the summer Lukaku might have put in a transfer request and do the rest to make it happen. Mourinho might let him go… How many years has he got left on his existing contract? Maybe we could get him on a free or pre-contract agreement a year before his contract runs out?

To be honest I’m not sure how many years Lukaku has left… If you’re correct though we are just one Oiler signing away! 🙂

Ie it makes sense and as long as arsenal are on the up the last year is in our favor. That said, Oilers are Oilers because they can afford not to have to sell.. Even more then they can afford to buy…

I personally think he could go miles with Aw and Arsenal..

Current rumor is Morata, RMs number 3 on loan in January…

    Cheers — jgc

    @AFC.. Agree..
I was very excited to watch Soton win 1-0 in firsthalf.. and hoped they can hold it into at least a draw.. hehehehe..
But maybe after were beaten by us before.. and play a very hard game.. and dont really have a good backup team.. they lost..

But it’s oke.. we will still at the top of the league.. before we face Chelsea at home.. and we will nail them down.. for our Christmas gift.. hehehehe..

But before that.. we must beat Everton, Napoli and City first.. And we will..
Yes we will.. cause We are The Champion..
    heheheheheehehe.. Go Gunners..

Reports saying we have had a 8 million bid (euros) rejected for Pato.

I’ll leave it to you guys to decide whether this is true..

  217. Gerry says:

AFC – There was a time when I thought Pato was pretty useful … but although he is the type of player we may like to see, I am not sure he would cut it in the EPL.

My guess would be that may be an ‘inquiry’ was made, but the Mirror/agent has put the price they might want for him, to complete the story?

Too many seasons have gone since he was highly rated. I just cannot see it happening.

Especially when you tag in the other story that ‘Shalke boy’ might be ours in the summer, if not January. Note; His buy-out clause only applies to the summer transfer window. They are unlikely to sell, or him wanting to leave before July. Pre-agreement perhaps in January?

Same goes for Benteke. That ship sailed at the end of his good season? If EPL defences can shut him out now, he’s now use to us.

The Everton loanee is another thing. But I’m with those who doubt Chelsea will sell to us. But if Everton get their money for Baines, they might get lucky?

Couple of names have faded have faded away, which might be why these stories are making the headlines.

For £6m I think the Dundee 17yo might be more likely, as Wenger type? I’ve yet to see him play, but the interest is there. Score and assists in equal measure. How he would cope down south is another matter. I know one thing, if he did come to us he will need a translater for half our squad – the Scottish accent is the most difficult one for Europeans to get their heads around. Not to mention the re-phrasing of sentences?
