Wenger AND Garde go with unchanged line-ups from their most recent matches.  Can the group from Greece pick up where they left off or will Villa’s team which grabbed a draw at Southampton keep us from going (at least temporarily) to the top of the table ahead of a week off and a showdown with Man City?

Please join us in the comments for a bit of live-blog…

  • We are off… Theo takes down a long ball nicely but cannot find Giroud with a simple entry pass…

Villa look prepared to move the ball quickly on the quick pitch…

  • 3rd minute: Villa has made the brighter start but we look calm defending… Campbell ball for Bellerin too much for the fast pitch…

  • 4th: Bacuna finds Gestede at the far post but he can only hit it for an easy Cech pick-up… Villa seem to think attack is the best form of defense (American spelling).

Campbell almosts gets a low cross past some defenders…

6th, Sinclair, left footed from distance is easy for Cech but it counts as a shot on target.

    7th. Penalty shout for Theo…

  • Replay shows that Hutton hauled Theo down…Ref may have wanted a consultation with assistants who had the better view…

  • 10th: Giroud is holding his mouth after doing the ground pounding bit… Not the face, not the face…

Villa picking up where they left off…going for it in attack…

  • 12th: They’re playing in our end but the attack ends with a tame cross straight to Cech… We give it all the way to Guzan…

More Villa after a giveaway from Campbell…harmlessly kicked away…

  • Agreed AB…

14th: Lovely turn from Ozil but the attack dies on our right…

We keep it in their half but Theo flagged for offside on another ball over the top…

  • 16th: We’re seeing more of the ball now and stroking it around… Bellerin to Campbell ends up with Guzan…

  • 17th: We’re starting to press Villa higher up the pitch

18th: Nice run up the middle of the pitch from Sinclair but Nacho steps in to take it away…

FK Villa from 35 yards… Out of play from Veretout

  • Welcome FMJ-14…

Ozil FK from a loooong way out almost catches Guzan stranded. Giroud’s looping header cleared, however…

  • 21st: Villa cross from Sanchez is only partially cleared by Cech…attempted volley is out of play…

  • 23rd… We’re not winning long balls nor holding much possession. Both teams giving the ball away cheaply in truth…

  • 24th: Foul from Gestede on Nacho on a Hutton throw… Now we try building from the back…

  • FMJ, what’s your story? Where are you based? Etc., etc…

Giveaway on our right leads to Ayew breaking…His shot is blocked at the point and now we have it at their end…

  • 27th: We’re keeping the ball better but our play between the lines is far from incisive. Theo fouled (again) by Hutton, but nearer the center line.

    Nacho clattered but he’s OK…

Ramsey almost finds Bellerin with the outside of his right foot. Referee chatting with Veretout…

29th: We’re pressing for a 2nd and moves are just breaking down in the box. FK from 35 for us.

  • Poorly cleared ball by Bellerin and a loose touch from Rambo leads to a wild 40 yarder by Gana well wide… Villa not looking too dangerous, IMO…

  • 34th: More Arsenal possession and Friend the ref calls one of two Villa fouls on our right side. More good delivery from Ozil but we’re called for manhandling in the box…

  • Bit more possession, but still not really controlling this. More threat warranted – and another goal to make safe.

  • 35th: Bellerin is moving the ball nicely and Villa are playing a high enough line that we’re continuing to try balls over the top…

36th: Their attack, however, is going nowhere…

  • Arsenal are playing a very patient game with the lead, AB… We maybe miss Santi as our quarterback today…

    THEO!!!!

  • Wow that was easy…

    Rambo tackle leads to a 3 v 1…

Ozil gives it to Ramsey for the easy finish….

  • Yesssssssssssssss!!!!!!!! That’s the way! hehehe. Ozil another assist. Ramsey getting back into form in the middle.

  • This could be a romp… Villa appear well beaten. That said, Ramsey’s tackle on Gana looked very nearly a foul…

Rambo, well set up by Bellerin (I think) has his shot blocked at the point…

42nd: Kos throughball intercepted and Villa win a corner

  • 😀 AB… Have you got this one on the telly? It was a very close play but the break was perfectly executed with both Giroud and Theo doing very well in our half…

Hutton gets a ball onto Gestede’s head but it’s looped up harmlessly

  • Theo offsides, puts the ball into the net…Wow, that was a nice practice shot…

Villa look very half-hearted and we appear very professional and ruthless… Not a lot of tight control in the middle of the pitch and some giveaways going for through and over the top passes but always dangerous… They’re on the back foot and looking concerned about a big scoreline…

That’s just my take… Tell me yours while I pull myself a HT coffee… 😀

  • HT thanks. I am a Londoner and an armchair fan since Alan Smith hit the Cup Winners Cup winner in 1994. I have been to a few games but not interested in paying the exorbitant ticket prices. I like to see the big picture and hope to see the detail, as best I can. I do love the beautiful game played beautifully so I appreciate Wenger very much even if I think he might need to toughen some of them up if they are to fulfill their potential. I don’t believe buying is always the answer (hate the transfer window stuff) we have great qualities still to emerge, not least the mental qualities of champions. We made progress over the last few seasons with winning the cups and this season is hopefully the fulfillment of those qualities, which puts us in with a great chance of bringing the title home. I think it can happen but it will be very, very tough and will/may require a few to come out of their shells… Campbell is doing that, now for the Ox, Chambers (in DM) and Gabriel. Bonus would be Wilshere if he can overcome injuries but that might have to wait a little longer.

  • Cheers FMJ… As you may or may not kinow, I’m an American…Mountains of California… but I lived for few months at my screen name just after the club made the move to the new stadium (almost in our back garden)… Indeed, it’s not a working man’s game with ticket prices as they are… What part of London?…

If we can keep getting results the comeback could be relatively welcoming for Jack W in the new year…

Is this one in the bag?

I feel bad for Remi Garde–how do you say ‘hair-dryer’ in French?… They might have a good ten minutes in them here…

Sherwood has left this team a wreck… Carles Gil impressed me earlier this season but I think he’s struggled with injury… Grealish, Ayew and Gil might be able to work Flamini and the back line… They’re also missing their Captain, Micah Richards today… Lescott and Okore are not very quick back there… Gonna be a miracle if Garde can get them to stay up… Tough on such a proud club, I think…

  • 48th: Villa finally have it…Veretout hits a hard one but high and wide. Decent work from Sinclair on their right… It’s like a morgue in the stadium…

  • Better from Villa…Sinclair and Hutton do well down the right but Gestede’s header glances off his dreads and out for a GK… Should have done better…

Now a shot from Gana is blocked at the point and a Carlos Sanchez curler from 30 yards is easily caught by Cech…

  • Thanks for the commentary HT.
I am DVRing the match– but have had to work from home this morning, unable to watch live– until now.
(Habitually, I watch on delay– and am comforted (mostly) knowing what is about to occur.)

    jw1

  • 51st… Giroud flagged off wrongly…

But wins a corner after keeping it in play nicely…

Corner is cleared but we keep it in until Theo lifts it harmlessly to Guzan…

  • Back on line – family lunch intervening! Only radio and web again sadly HT. But the description of the second goal was a fulsome one – and glowing!

  • jw…You’re like the Cockie Monster of Texas… 😀

Cech and Mert have some ugly looking stuff dealing with backpasses…

Bellerin does much better heading a cross down to his keeper but wide of his post…

  • I hope Villa don’t go down, yes they are a proud club, but also I would miss us playing them.. 😉

  • Cheers FMJ…

Ooohhh…Open header from Hutton to Sinclair but the latter can’t get it down and on target… They’re finding some pleasure down our right…

    Gestede off, Gil on…

  • That one should serve a warning…

Campbell flagged off negating great work from Ozil…

Gil wants to move it forward quickly…

  • 60th: Arsenal moves not coming off at all…but Villa seem pretty bad with the balls we’re offering up to them…

  • Villa are giving a little go here… But Kos steps in and we break… Ozil showing frustration that nobody followed his run…

  • Yeah, I’d like to see some subs…

Bacuna curls one just over the far corner from a tough angle… a yard lower and to the left and he’d have beaten Cech…

  • 66th min: Away fans making a good noise…

Ox does some nice hold up work at the top of the box and Gibbs almost gets on a loose ball…

  • 69th: Now we’ve got it…it ends at Gibbs and Villa have it… This could be a tedious 20 minutes…

  • Hutton crosses are all they’ve got…Wins a corner, however…

    and another…

  • That one was taken short, the cross came in and the BFG cleared to a wild volley from Gana…

  • 73rd: I think we should score a third and really put it out of reach…

We look happy defending, however… Gibbs does well on the touchline with a self-pass they have to put into touch…

    Giroud fouls Gil?…

  • 75th: Ramsey does well and passes to Gibbs but his shot is very high angled and easy for Guzan…

Villa have it for a second but we play it out of our half…

Carlos Sanchez hit in the face by Giroud’s shoulder… Grealish about to come on….

  • Sanchez is already wearing a mask… but seems OK…

Arsenal defending comfortably but Gil manages a left footer from 30 just wide…Cech had it covered anyway…

    Grealish on, Gana off

  • Ramsey finds Ozil with a lovely ball on the break…Ref might’ve helped Ozil but chooses not too…Other end, Gil curls one onto Kos’ chest… A few fans want a handball call…Not in a million years…

  • 82nd: Kos pushes it wide left but then his cross is a wild one.. Ramsey gets it back and the ball eventually falls for the Ox… shot is deflected for a corner but nothing comes of it…

  • 85th: Ramsey sends Ox forward and it’s a good run… Okore steps in so it’s only a corner…

Ozil off, Chambers on before it’s taken…

  • Hi guys,

Am happy we have taken back initiative in the last ten minutes or so. Good first half and our midfield have been running the show. Really good to have Rambo back in the middle.

  • Ox corner doesn’t clear the first man…Giroud called for wrestling anyhow…

  • This is hardly a match today, TA… Sunderland even if they couldn’t finish their moves at least made us work in the middle of the pitch… Hutton, if he hadn’t made the silly early foul for the pen was their best player…

Silly run their from the Ox with too heavy a touch to lose the ball…

  • 4 mins stoppage time…

Adama Traore makes a good run and ruffles the side netting…Best moment of the day for Villa?

  • Rambo wants another… Outplays Lescott for the ball but elects to try and chip from an audacious angle rather than reset the play…

  • Ox puts a ball on Bellerin’s head… straight to Guzan… One more minute here

  • Corner for us to end it?…

Let’s hope the Toonies can do a bit better vs Spuds…

FT, easiest points of the season?… Wenger tells Garde to call him for some advice?…

  • Excellent result – glad we were up against Villa today, not a tea, fighting for survival. 8 days rest and then a bigger test for us. COYG!!!!!

  • Or the home support has had their life blood sucked dry…Those American owned clubs… :shakes head…

  • The problem for Garde is that Sherwood only kept Villa up through a bit of spirit…With Benteke and Delph (not good enough for City but very good at Villa…) gone they look absolutely miserable…

Indeed AB, this was maybe the only away stadium we could have hoped for after the mid-week exertions…

That said,we played very professionally and only allowed low percentage shots and crosses… Cech and the CBs were calm all day long…

  • That’s not until tomorrow, right?… Chavs–Foxes, I mean…

What do we have today? Pool-WBA, Spurs-Toon?

    Three draws work for me…

  • Hard to take much from this match… Both goals might have gone differently if the ref had done the usual thing and blown against us (or not blown)…That said, this was a very, very good week for the team. We got through with no new injuries and now we’ll have some players coming back… Man City, in the parts I saw yesterday, are not the same without el Kun (and their defense is very unconvincing). He might be back but how fit will he be?

Certainly it will be tougher than today, but that’s saying nothing…

  • I watched those folks last week and it’s stunning how they (Chavs) cannot score. Hazard looks almost Ox-esque with the final ball…Or maybe like Ramsey and Santi from earlier in the season… Cesc doesn’t move well but he still gets the ball more or less where he wants it to go… It’s all a bit weird, IMO… Maybe Doctor Eva is a witch and has cursed them… 😀

Goal late for Utrecht vs Ajax…on one of my Spanish language stations…

  • Is that Bergkamp on the Ajax bench?… and where’s Yaya?…

Other matches I could watch are Benfica vs Coimbra, Eibar vs Valencia (Gary Neville’s new team), Augsburg vs Schalke…

Spurs-Toon is probably the best of the lot…
