  • Good luck gunners! Can’t watch first half so really appreciate this live blog. Cheers 🙂

  • Surprised to see Per on the bench. Good to see Coq on bench and A rested Flamini to start. Nice for Campbell to get a start again and to see Alexis start. Strong team and a big challenge for Koz and Gab to keep our defence tight I guess we are going to play with a high line and take the game to them

  • OK, I will give it a go with descriptions… It should help that the missus is home sick and watching next to me..

  • Those green kits So’ton are wearing are rather hideous, no?

    We have kick-off!

  • TA. Mrs. 17 asks if you can take delivery of packages at your home address… 😀

So’ton have some throws down at our end… Commentators mentioning empty seats and quiet atmosphere…

  • Cech, worried about Van Dijk’s run puts it out for a corner, which he catches…

  • Kos passes into touch… We’ve yet to get our passing game going… Now Tadic wins a throw from Bellerin…

  • Better but Campbell’s throughball is straight to a man in green… And, after we build again from the back he loses it again.

Ozil finally gets a touch and does nice work but the 1-2 between Giroud and Campbell doesn’t come off…

  • Cheers, TA…

Sp’ton work a shot from Wanyama but Kos stopped it. Playing it out there’s a mix-up and it goes into touch…

So’ton win another corner and again Cech claims it… But we can’t get it out of our half until Long is flagged offside…

  • Indeed, TA… Opposite of fluent thus far…

Long ball over the top from Alexis to Ozil … Awesome first touch but keeper makes the save… Supreme skill from both players…

Long ball from Forster makes a chance for Mane but a very tough angle… Easy for Cech…

  • 14th min and So’ton have some good possession near the top of our box after Bellerin loses it for us… Harmlessly out of play to end move…

We get into their half but Alexis pass is easily cut out… Back with So’ton…

  • 17th min: A bit better with some decent work in their box by Giroud and Alexis… Finally we’re keeping it down at their end but Ramsey’s cross is overhit by double…Still down there, however…

  • Ozil called for a foul on Romeu after the latter flattened Alexis… Ozil using all his new English words… 😀

Really poor giveaway from Campbell who then clatters Mane for a FK like the earlier dangerous one…

  • Both teams struggling to connect with their passing games…

Oooh…Bellerin’s cross headed across by Giroud but Ozil’s toe poke is blocked just wide…

Looked a goal but somehow kept out…

Ref not protecting Alexis at all…

  • Flamini worries me, TA…seems like such an effort just to do the basics… We could use a player coming towards the ball at times and that’s not his instinct…

Slightly better but our move ends with Wanyama bullying Bellerin off the ball…

Another completely missed call goes against Alexis… The missus is upset with Lee Mason…

  • Alexis finds Ozil with a throughball but he has to dribble it wide and the move breaks down. Long almost gets onto a quick but wide So’ton break and then Kos has to head back to Cech with Mane bearing down…

  • Campbell now on the left and Alexis on the right sends a throughball into no one…Forster waits for it and gathers…

  • 30th min:

We try to build again but Ozil leaves it short for Alexis…

Other end, Tadic fakes out Flamini but his left footed shot is into Cech’s arms…

  • Promising move breaks down with Bells’ tame cross is caught by Forster…

Other end So’ton had us badly spaced in the box but the pull-back was too strong…rolls to Romeu but his shot from 22 yards is over…

  • Giroud crosses over everybody… So’ton lose it and we look OK on the break but Mason won’t give Alexis a whistle when he’s hauled down… He also doesn’t blow for Ollie’s foul, however…

Gabby at the back almost gets punished with overly fancy foortwork… So’ton are pressing hard all over the pitch and we’re struggling with it. In truth we’re having trouble stringing more than a pass or two together…

  • Match is absurdly scrappy at this juncture…

Wow, Flamini whistled after plenty of other brutish plays…

Cedric boots a cross worse than any of ours…. Game is devolving rapidly…

  • Flamini struggling to clear boots it into touch…

40th minute… Now he kicks it behind for a corner…

  • Taken short but almost cleared…Some head tennis and it falls for Mane who has Gabby beaten. Luckily his shot is shinned wide…

    We’re really playing crap here…Sorry…

  • Ozil is not happy with his teammates…

Slightly better playing it out of our half but very slow movement… Nonetheless Alexis almost finds Giroud for a stooping header… We win our first corner…

  • It doesn’t clear the first man but we keep it in their half, at least…

Oooh better there as Campbell gets into the box…Won’t use his right foot however and So’ton are able to clear it…

  • So’ton dangerous down at our end but can’t find a shot…

Half time and the boos are audible… Not good…

  • Saw the first half and we have the right intensity and balance, unlucky that Ozil didn’t score.. a point blank save. Great live blogging 17, I agree about the connecting with the passes. Southampton have done better with their fluency in periods of that half and have a clear game plan that is so far working. We need to keep this pace up which will mean Theo and Ox at some stage.

  • They run a highlight reel of the first half w/o commentary and Ozil did very well to make his two chances but Forster did even better to block them… So’ton’s chances were not very clear cut by comparison.

The bigger problem seems just basic ball control and passing under the pressure So’ton is creating. Ramsey’s having one of those nights where it seems to take him a few extra touches to find control, though it seems unfair to single him out when others are also struggling. Inconsistent reffing not helping things either…

  • The crowd are not supporting the team as they should. They are watching a performance. They get lowest rating so far.

  • An anxious crowd feeds into the players and may be a contributing factor to those wayward passes. The players are up for it.

  • Ozil looks very focused. Alexis could use some help from Mason, Those two can make magic at any moment but we could use others playing up to their level…

2nd half on and a Giroud, Ozil combo should have netted at least a corner. GK instead…

  • Better possession early here in the 2nd…

Alexis finally gets a call but it’s near the center circle…And he wins another, same area, could bode well…

oooh…Giroud right footed curler saved at full stretch by Forster…

  • Before that Flamini almost gifts Long with a run on keeper but then Long lost it himself…let off for MF20…

  • Campbell does well to win a high ball and bring it into the box…Needs it on his left foot and the chance evaporates…

  • So’ton really play Route One and press…We look nervy enough dealing with it, however…

Rambo loses out to Wanyama but he boots it harmlessly forward….

  • Very nice there with Alexis giveng Ozil a great pass but there are no runners for his pull back… Frustrating…

  • Giroud trying for a 1-2 with Nacho instead puts it straight into touch…

Almost all Arsenal now and a bit louder in the stands with by far the greatest club…

Ugh…bad giveaway by Gabriel but Mane’s shot is easy for Cech…

Bellerin makes a better cross but Alexis just too small to win it cleanly for a shot

  • Romeu somehow avoids a yellow clearing out Alexis. From the restart the latter pushes it forward for Giroud who wins a corner… Ozil’s delivery finds Giroud but Forster saves…

  • Flamini breaks up some So’ton possession but they get it back…Floated cross is easy for Cech…

Other end, Alexis can’t keep a long ball in play…

Giroud loses one of his own over the end line…

  • An hour played… All very scrappy and we’re forced to block twice from So’ton shots near the edge of our box… Alexis hauled back by Cedric who gets the first yellow of the match…

  • Jamie Vardy….

If Houghton doesn’t pick him for England, then he’s an idiot…

  • Alexis looking for Ozil with a lofted ball forces Fonte to head out for a corner…

    Theo in, JC out…

They break from our corner but Bells kicks into touch…

  • So’ton hold a bit of possession but soon we get it… and move it pretty well. Theo crosses but Alexis’ header is too central and Forster gathers…

  • 65th min: Gabriel very poor allows a So’ton move…It breaks down when they play to an offside Mane… Recovering Gabby might’ve fouled Mane in the box but the So’ton player stayed on his feet

  • Double save by Forster from Theo on the right!! Very good chances, both of them…

And he does it again! On an Alexis header slowly bouncing to the far corner…

  • Kos heads over from 3 yards!!! That was a golden chance and a great cross from Ozil…

  • Romeu after great footwork gives it to Nacho… We build again but only win a corner…and another as Giroud is pushed down by Fonte…

Alexis shot cleared off the line!!!

  • 72nd minute and we are getting closer…

No cigar yet… Ozil cross too floated and Giroud can only head over…

  • Giroud gets to the location but misses the ball… Fonte is bleeding so play is stopped…

  • That’s a lot of blood… After several minutes they’ve got it patched and Fonte will continue…

  • So’ton do well on our left and Cedric gets a cross in…Shouts for handball on Gabby…

Evenutally we clear and Alexis wins a FK from 40 yards on Wanyama…

  • Ozil doesn’t like the magic spray and Mason warns him about moving it…The FK was better but Giroud’s header was easily tipped over by the giant keeper…

Corner doesn’t clear the first man…

Now Giroud has his head cracked by Van Dijk…

  • 82nd min and we still need that goal…

Kos slips trying to keep a ball in play and So’ton get a throw…

    Ward-Prowse off, Juanmi in

  • Total I remember Koeman bringing Ajax to Highbury in the CL…

It was a sterile 0-0, but Koeman got the result he wanted…

Vardy again, that fella is a poacher that’s for sure.
    18 league goals this season…

    And no England caps…
    What a joke.

  • Ooooh great play but Ozil and Alexis can’t finish it…

    Coq in, Flamini off…

  • Van Dijk had cleared before Ozil could strike but it fell for Alexis but Forster blocked again…

    Mane off, Targett on…

  • 89th minute and Alexis runs into the wall of Wanyama…

Gabriel, very late, gets a yellow and gives a FK out wide on our right…

  • Cleared by Giroud but So’ton keep it in… Finally we get it back…Ozil drops it for Rambo but his shot is straight to Forster…

    6 mins added time…

  • Rambo gives it to Van Dijk who brings it all the way up our right side to win a throw which they are extremely slow to take…

  • And another…and they actually fashion a half chance…

    3 of the 6 have been played…

  • Kos way out of play…

Finally we get it in play, Ozil hauled down after great work but Bell’s cross is an easy catch for Forster…

    One minute left…and So’ton have another throw…

  • Last Chance…Ozil, cross is deflected and then cleared. Full time, Boos rain down…

  • Definitely tried hard, TA… The spirit is there but we’re not making goals… Possession play (missing) in the middle of the pitch is forcing our finishers to come deep for the ball, IMO… We scrapped hard and made some chances but the big keeper was up to them…

    Slipping away it feels…

  • I just hope that Arsene feels a bit of shame when he sees where he stands in terms of paycheck and where Arsenal stand.

At the end of the day, City have Aguero and we have Walcott/Giroud. That’s why we won’t win the league and City will.

I can only hope that Arsene will finally look at the mirror in the morning of St Scrooge’s Day (the day we mathematically lose any chance to win the league) and give a chance to someone who is not afraid to take the risk and spend money in January.

  • Why does Wenger keep players like Walcott, Giroud, Wilshire, Flamini, Arteta, and Per? Only to get 4th place

  • TA, you know I’m right. 🙂 He had a lot of millions to spend but he chose otherwise. OK, but then his wooden lawyers shouldn’t say anything like: “We couldn’t deal with City because they had spent so much money.”

Cech – did well. He is a world-class player, one of three we have.

Bellerin- can do a lot better. He’ll probably learn a lot from Guardiola when Arsene sells him to Man City next summer.

Gabriel – a clean sheet covers the fact he could have conceded penalty. His partnership with Kos is still a work in progress. I feel sorry for him a bit as he’ll see his future self next to him – Kos hasn’t won the league yet and never will at Arsenal.

    Nacho- a top, top player.

Flamini – he should offer Arsene a job at his company as he owes him a lot.

Rambo – poor performance. Play him next to Coquelin, Scrooge.

Campbell – poor performance. Too many misplaced passes.

Ozil – poor finishing. One of our two world-class outfield players. He’ll enjoy playing for Zidane’s Real when Arsene sells him.

Alexis – he is the other world-class player. Unlucky with his finishing but looks sharp and creative. He’ll win the league next season at City when Arsene sells him.

Giroud – his limits can’t be overfought.

Walcott – he should be docked a two-week wage whenever he refers to himself as a striker. He has scored the same number of goals like Koscielny.

  • Admir,

Same old pessimistic post match comments you have there.

I have only one sentence to say to the team: Throw away the new boots. Stick to the ones that worked so well.

    JK

  • Southampton are a tough outfit, consistently gaining the refs favour and interrupting our flow. They were ‘clever’ like Costa! Add to that our nervy ‘fans’ feeding into the players and players not quite at their best – it all adds up to a disjointed spluttering performance. Take the long view and keep the faith that the old Arsenal continuity that we found turn of year last year will come back. That does depends on us cultivating further that iron will to win and making our own luck/destiny. It’s a test of character, but we can do it. Yes we’re going through a difficult patch in form right now, but every team will do, there is a long way to go and we are still only two points off City.. Have a fine day all. 😀

  • FMJ14

That is a fine summary of our situation last night and in general. Take the long view and keep the faith… so true.

I will try and write something tonight, so please you and other FFGs join me then.

Admir, hope the sun is shining on you today; it will help you to chase those internal daemons away! 😉

  • Cheers TA. Yes I will look out for it and comment when I get the chance. 🙂

Speaking of cultivating character in my last comment… I just saw the Ox video of him dancing in the tunnel right before the match…. A small thing perhaps and team dynamics we are not privy too, but I am sure these things including the selfies and the hashtags etc don’t help – particularly before kick off. We need Steve Bould or Tony Adams in there focusing their minds on winning right before they go out and make that the underlying culture at the club. It’s tough but we have Bould and we need others to do it.

  • Having said that we did try hard yesterday and of course more than one contributing factor caused the outcome.

  • @TA – no, it’s actually snowing here.

The good news is, we are one day closer to the day when Mr Scrooge will leave our dugout. There is a positive note in everything. 🙂
