…Join us as Arsenal get our season going vs Claude Puel’s Saints from the South Coast.

Can Arsenal keep the good feeling going after securing Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez late in the transfer window.  Will the new boys move straight into the team?.

Southampton, after a shaky first 3 matches will also dig in and want a result and show that another summer of losing top players (Victor Wanyama, Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane) is not the end of good things for them.

Blog owner Total Arsenal’s rationale for his predicted team can be found in a previous post.  Here are his picks:

submit football lineup

Jet lag, Champions League football in Paris on Tuesday, and all other factors which might justify starting from the bench, I still cannot see Alexis being left out today, so I’d swap out one new Gunner (Lucas) and put the other (Mustafi) in.  Rob Holding, through no fault of his own, I think, will take up a bench seat, as will Lucas.

Or we could be completely wrong.  Those are our best guesses.  What are yours?

Arsene Wenger’s line-up should be available in a half hour or so and I’ll it up–Southampton’s too–as they become available.  Please join us in the comments.  Cheers!

OK. Official teams are in…and both of us were a bit off.  Both new signings start but Francis Coquelin plays in MF (not Xhaka) and Alexis and Giroud both start on the bench while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gets the start.

Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Cazorla, Coquelin, Walcott, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lucas

Subs Ospina, Holding, Elneny, Xhaka, Iwobi, Alexis, Giroud

Southampton: Forster, Cedric, Clasie, Fonte, Davis, Rodriguez, Tadic, Romeu, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Redmond

Subs McCarthy, Yoshida, Long, Austnin, Ward-Prowse, Hojbjerg, Targett

  1. TotalArsenal says:

Cheers 17ht, yes agreed Bravo was a lucky boy.

  2. TotalArsenal says:

The M Derby has been played at a murderous tempo, and players look knackered after just 60 minutes.

  3. 17highburyterrace says:

Sane and Sagna did well down the right…The former looks a player, the latter we know is one…

Clattenburg may have to make a real call at some point as the game looks to be getting more and more ragged…

  4. TotalArsenal says:

Ohhoho offsite, lucky escape for the Oilers as I don’t think it needed a touch by Ibrahimovic… Now MC should have a penalty

  5. 17highburyterrace says:

DeBruyne hits the post…Wow…Woodwork and De Gea are keeping United in this one…

  6. TotalArsenal says:

The game is passing the £90m man totally by. What a waste of money!

  7. TotalArsenal says:

    Nolito hasn’t impressed either

  8. TotalArsenal says:

TEAM NEWS: Mustafi and Lucas start

Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas have been handed their debuts against Southampton at Emirates Stadium.

Laurent Koscielny partners Mustafi in the centre of defence, while Francis Coquelin steps into midfield alongside Santi Cazorla.

Lucas leads the line in attack, while Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain start on the wings.

Arsenal team: Cech, Bellerin, Koscielny, Mustafi, Monreal, Cazorla, Coquelin, Walcott, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lucas

Arsenal substitutes: Ospina, Holding, Elneny, Xhaka, Iwobi, Alexis, Giroud

  9. 17highburyterrace says:

Teams are in… Alexis doesn’t start, nor does Giroud nor Xhaka so both of us were 9 for 11… Neither of us picked Coquelin and the Ox…

Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Cazorla, Coquelin, Walcott, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lucas

Subs Ospina, Holding, Elneny, Xhaka, Iwobi, Alexis, Giroud

Southampton Forster, Cedric, Clasie, Fonte, Davis, Rodriguez, Tadic, Romeu, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Redmond

Subs McCarthy, Yoshida, Long, Austnin, Ward-Prowse, Hojbjerg, Targett

  10. TotalArsenal says:

Wow, Xhaka, Giroud and (indeed) Alexis 😀⚽️ On the bench

  11. 17highburyterrace says:

It’s a lot of pace and power and maybe AW wants to give the former So’ton boys (Theo, Ox) a chance…

We both got 9 of 11 but I’ll give you props, TA, for the resting of our strongest, most experienced attackers for Tuesday night… We do have a lot of matches here and you can see (from this Manc derby) that many players are not at full fitness…

  12. TotalArsenal says:

I had three wrong, 17HT… You win hahaha 😀

Cannot see us win the game without playing at least one of our main goal scorers today: Ollie or Alexis

  13. 17highburyterrace says:

Bravo is having a woeful debut, but Plugs (Clattenburg) has spared him today…

  14. 17highburyterrace says:

Winning the line-up means very little–and I missed 3 also, so there you go…

    Gotta win the game…

  15. TotalArsenal says:

Yes speed up front for sure. We need the ex-Saints to produce the goods ⚽️⚽️⚽️

  16. 17highburyterrace says:

I dunno, the comment people are saying “wonderful entertainment” but I just see a ref who let ’em play and a match that should have had some pens and sending offs…

The result is probably right given that Moo-man’s big-man midfield was a very bad pick. The changes made at half-time got them a deserved draw (for that half)… Claudio Bravo makes Cech’s Arsenal debut (vs West Ham a year ago) a pure triumph…except on the luck front…

  17. 17highburyterrace says:

I guess you folks on the Island want to go back in time (i.e., the Brexit vote) but it seems awfully unfair that we get all the games while you have to listen to the radio…even if it’s on the interweb…

  18. 17highburyterrace says:

Anyhow, consider me very excited to get to see Lucas and Mustafi in action…And I can see some logic in using Le Coq to anchor things. Xhaka’s long passes are less useful if So’ton park the bus. That said, so are Theo’s runs off the last man…

  19. TotalArsenal says:

I don’t expect the Saints to park the bus. They play football and quite well too. So le Coq is needed to strengthen our defensive abilities. I now really believe Wenger has one eye on our game on Tuesday and hopes to have enough quality on the pitch to take three points today. Playing both Ox and Theo is a mistake imo, but hope to be wrong.

  20. 17highburyterrace says:

We’ll see… Who are the Saints playing up front? Rodriguez, Tadic? Of their starters I don’t see much in the way of attacking players. Of course, I’ve yet to see them play this season. TA, if you say they moved the ball well, I believe you…

  21. TotalArsenal says:

In terms of football they outplayed MU for big parts of the game, 17, but they do lack firepower up-front. Shane Long was their main man at the Theatre of Screams..

  22. 17highburyterrace says:

It sounds like Rodriguez up front today… Who is this referee, Madley? Hopefully we can play a good clean game and get out smartly…

I hear you about playing Theo and the Ox at the same time, and, of course, Perez is an unknown (to me) quantity… Ozil and Santi, however, make me feel warm inside…

  23. 17highburyterrace says:

    We have kick-off…

(The new, oh so revealing, style…) What did we learn?…

  24. 17highburyterrace says:

Lucas and Theo almost work an early counter… Lucas a little in quick-sand and loses out.

Indeed, So’ton pushing up nicely… Tadic offside but Cech saves anyhow…

  25. 17highburyterrace says:

4th minute: Mustafi almost hangs Nacho out to dry after a quick move with the ball. All Southampton thus far…but Rodriguez header is over…

  26. 17highburyterrace says:

    7th minute: Arsenal haven’t started yet…

8th minute: Bad Giveaway from Mustafi but Coq wins a decent battle in MF…our first bit of a move towards their box…

  27. TotalArsenal says:

radio commentary: Southampton are confident in possession.

  28. 17highburyterrace says:

Slow going early and Tadic looks the brightest player on the pitch…

Better there but Redmond breaks up Ozil ‘s pass in the box after he thought he might’ve been offside…

  29. 17highburyterrace says:

There’s no reason they shouldn’t be…We’ve really yet to string any passes together. Gotta get Santi on the ball a bit but maybe we’re hoping to lure them forward and hit them on the break.

    Redmond looks a danger too…

Not a ton(ne) of quality at either end, to be honest….

  30. TotalArsenal says:

No starts for Wilshere, Chambers or Flamini btw.

  31. 17highburyterrace says:

14th minute: Kos defends well on Tadic in the corner… Still, So’ton are only gaining in confidence. We’re moving the ball slowly and not very accurately…

Good run down the left by the Ox but cleared…

  32. 17highburyterrace says:

Santi working with the CBs keeps us possession for a bit but Ox blasts a ball towards no one…

    Very poor so far…

  33. 17highburyterrace says:

FK and a yellow by Nacho on Redmond…Very little contact but well sold by Redmond. FK from a very central position 20 yds out…

  34. 17highburyterrace says:

1-nil So’ton Cech own goal… off the post then off his back…

    Trouble now…

  35. 17highburyterrace says:

    Now we’re the away team…

  36. 17highburyterrace says:

Good tackle by Mustafi who even sends in a cross but nobody’s there… So’ton now sitting back a bit…

We’re going to need to up the tempo or thread some passes through some tight holes…

In other words, not much upon which to hang our hats…

    Southampton back in possession…

  37. 17highburyterrace says:

24th minute: This is pretty woeful… We’re gonna lose the possession stat…

Bad foul on the Ox and we get a near corner FK…

  38. TotalArsenal says:

Radio commentary: need to get Ozil and Santi more into the game..

  39. 17highburyterrace says:

Santi finds Theo at the near post but he heads over…

  40. 17highburyterrace says:

    Too true, TA…

  41. 17highburyterrace says:

Santi gets a very (very) soft yellow—maybe for dissent?…

  42. 17highburyterrace says:

This is bad… Lucas has been a zero presence, esp. when you think about Giroud…

Arsenal survive a good So’ton move but then break decently and eventually Van Djykk clears over his own crossbar…

  43. 17highburyterrace says:

    KOS!!!! Bicycle Kick!!!! Wow!!!!

  44. TotalArsenal says:

1-1 King Koz to the rescue! What happened there, 17HT?

  45. allezkev says:

    Kozzer, birthday boy 😎

  46. 17highburyterrace says:

From the corner the ball was won with a pair of looping headers then MAGIC. So’ton complained that he almost took off a defender’s head in doing so…

  47. TotalArsenal says:

Happy 31th birthday, King Koz!!! 😉

  48. TotalArsenal says:

You beat me to it Kevski. You listening to radio as well?

  49. 17highburyterrace says:

That was as good as a third espresso, my friend…

OK, two set piece goals–both credited to Arsenal players but maybe we’ve found some urgency now.

Santi wins a FK about 40 yds out but central…

  50. 17highburyterrace says:

Better from Arsenal winning 50-50s but still a lot of giveaways. We could really use Giroud as Theo and Lucas seem a bit out of sync…

  51. 17highburyterrace says:

36th minute: The goal has helped but Ozil’s shot is blocked after a fine cross from Bellerin.

  52. 17highburyterrace says:

Coq in deep (heheheheh) overelaborates after nice work between Ox and Lucas… Other end, Tadic works too hard for a left footed shot and we almost find Theo on the quick break. Both teams willing to play, TA…

  53. 17highburyterrace says:

40th minute: So’ton have some possession but are doing very little with it.
41st: Back with us and we get forward through Santi’s close control. Kos gives it away, however

  54. allezkev says:

    Yeah Total, BBC5Live whilst I’m working…

It’s a rainy day in London Town, good for cabbies… 😉

Can’t understand why AW didn’t start with Giroud..?

  55. TotalArsenal says:

By the sounds of it they are making us work hard to get into our game, which is what I expected. Still feel that Ox and Theo is one too many as they both have their moments but don’t do enough to take over the game. One is okay, two is one too many

  56. 17highburyterrace says:

Getting towards halftime so a goal would be very, very nice…

Theo and Bells work nicely down the right and Theo lofts a cross which Ox brings down wonderfully but his shot is blocked.

Corner kept in but cleared for a throw….

  57. TotalArsenal says:

Sounds good Kev. Sunny is bonny Scotland 🙂

  58. 17highburyterrace says:

So’ton sitting deeper hoping to get to the HT break…

    Hi there, AK…

Lucas has a ball off his hand but he wasn’t beaten to the Nacho cross by Van Djykk

  59. 17highburyterrace says:

Sunny here in California too… 😀

    2 mins ET

Mustafi a little too pumped up with that one…blasted over everybody….

  60. TotalArsenal says:

Good to hear it, 17HT. Hope the fires have calmed down now.

  61. 17highburyterrace says:

That’s the whistle… Wenger will need to makes his changes sooner rather than later I think…

  62. 17highburyterrace says:

Whoa…What an assist from Payet vs Watford… Ribona? Will take Kos’ overhead kick off the goal of the week…

We’ve still got some haze here in the mountains, but not nearly as bad as it was… We could really use some rain, however…

  63. 17highburyterrace says:

2nd half on… Looks plenty rainy in Islington…

Shane Long on for So’ton in place of Rodriguez, no changes for us…

  64. 17highburyterrace says:

Early possession but Ox blasts another cross 20 yds long and wide…

  65. TotalArsenal says:

Plenty of that here over the last few days, 17. But today it is dry and sunny – fam is shopping in Glasgow 🙂

  66. allezkev says:

Hiya 17tino, you can’t beat a bit of rain mate.

  67. 17highburyterrace says:

49th minute: So’ton have it but we get it back. They seem to be timewasting already…

Santi fouled near the center circle by Shane Long…

More possession but not much penetration…

  68. TotalArsenal says:

67 minutes: Perez and Ox off, Giroud and Alexis on?

  69. allezkev says:

Shane Long eh, he’ll soon start kicking everything in an Arsenal shirt.

  70. 17highburyterrace says:

The Ox is in the match but nothing is coming off for him. Get some subs on, I say…

Chance of rain in the forecast here…

We’re keeping the ball at least and have now won a corner through Bellerin and Theo…

  71. 17highburyterrace says:

We should have a 2nd corner but they give goal kick…

    Forster given yellow for time-wasting…

  72. TotalArsenal says:

Wow, the Hornets winning now at the former Olympic stadium, were two goals behind

  73. 17highburyterrace says:

Better from So’ton but we break decently until Ozil’s woeful first touch top of the box…

Shane Long-distance but an easy save for Cech…

  74. TotalArsenal says:

This is what you are hoping for:

  75. 17highburyterrace says:

Good break there led by Santi…Ozil finds Lucas but his shot is blocked…

  76. 17highburyterrace says:

Yes, something like that… It might make the Porcini pop, too…

We’re most definitely on the front foot but a bit slow with the final passes and shots…

  77. 17highburyterrace says:

Santi breaks up the break…One Santi Cazorla rings out…

  78. 17highburyterrace says:

Ollie and Alexis to come on shortly…

    Bellerin blasts but just wide…

    Lucas and Ox out…

  79. 17highburyterrace says:

63rd minute taken up by the slow walk of a So’ton sub or some cramping or something…

64th minute: Corner after Fonte heads out…

    Santi delivers but it’s cleared…

  80. 17highburyterrace says:

Ozil’s having a poor game today and fails to control Alexis’ nice throughball….

  81. 17highburyterrace says:

Game is stretched and Arsenal get a let off when Tadic and Long combine but the Irishman misses the target trying to chip the onrushing Cech…

  82. TotalArsenal says:

Lucky escape there by the Long miss…pfff. COYG!

    Jack on for Bournemouth.

    Spuds winning at Stoke.. COYGs

  83. 17highburyterrace says:

There are some tired players out there…

Ozil finds Alexis but it’s blasted over…Needed to find the target there…

  84. 17highburyterrace says:

Alexis is bright but off with the final ball…this time trying to find Santi with the pass across the top of the box…

    So’ton with the ball now…

  85. 17highburyterrace says:

We’re doing better and the game is very open. Alexis left footer is blocked at the point…

  86. 17highburyterrace says:

73rd minute: Fonte and Giroud crash together and stay down awhile…

74th minute: Theo called for a foul and is looking close to a yellow for dissent. Iwobi getting readied…

  87. 17highburyterrace says:

Decent cross from So’ton but it’s headed over by Long…

    Theo off, Iwobi on…

Giroud called for a foul on a route 1 ball…

  88. TotalArsenal says:

“There’s a sense of excitement when Jack Wilshere gets the ball, in what is a much more open game now. He’s roaming the pitch to try to influence things, even coming out to the right wing to get the ball.”

  89. 17highburyterrace says:

Ooooooohhhh that should have been the winner. A big mistake by Van Djyk but Giroud slips on the final ball…

  90. 17highburyterrace says:

Alexis, still bright, still missing with the final ball… He did well to make Giroud’s chance, however…

  91. 17highburyterrace says:

Nacho in space hits it wide but blocked out for a corner. That was a good chance. Giroud over from the corner with a weak, looping header…

  92. TotalArsenal says:

squeaky bum time. We really need the three points today. COYGs

  93. 17highburyterrace says:

81st min: Building from the back Alexis wins a FK at the corner of their box after getting shoved down…

    Santi to take it…

  94. 17highburyterrace says:

But the man mountain (Forster) claims it…

  95. 17highburyterrace says:

83rd minute: Southampton have a little possession and almost score again. Cech made a fine save but Long should have put it into the empty net with Cech stranded.

  96. 17highburyterrace says:

That was a good break but Santi’s cross cannot be turned on target by Giroud’s diving header…

  97. 17highburyterrace says:

    Yellow for Hoiburg…

Getting late now… Ozil can’t get a call but Alexis is whistled for his foul…

  98. 17highburyterrace says:

88th minute: Getting very late now…

Alexis crosses out of play from a difficult position…

  99. 17highburyterrace says:

More timewasting after Ozil’s cross is grabbed by Forster… Keep it on the ground, I say…

90th minute: We look done but there should be ample ET…

  100. allezkev says:

  101. 17highburyterrace says:

    Corner won…

And kept in but Santi’s cross isn’t put in…

  102. allezkev says:

    Fingers crossed chaps……..

  103. 17highburyterrace says:

Giroud’s shirt was grabbed…Other end, the commentators are saying Shane Long should have one himself.

Kos is down hurt, so this could be a costly end of match scramble…

Santi wants to take the pen…

  104. 17highburyterrace says:

Looks like a black eye for Kos…

  105. allezkev says:

    My hero… Ha ha ha…. 😀

  106. 17highburyterrace says:

Yellow cards for So’ton as they delay Santi’s pen…

    Which he scores…. 2-1 Arsenal

  107. TotalArsenal says:

    Fucking brilliant Santi. 🙂

  108. 17highburyterrace says:

96th minute but shouldn’t So’ton be punished as they delayed the pen?…

  109. 17highburyterrace says:

Ridiculous amount of time given but finally the whistle blows…

  110. TotalArsenal says:

Well I am just grateful for the three points but of course we need to play better if we want to do well this season. We needed a lot of luck today by the sounds of it.

  111. TotalArsenal says:

Koz gives presents on his birthday 🙂

  112. 17highburyterrace says:

I gotta run, but the final ball was lacking and Ozil had a poor game by his standards. Speaking of standards, Alexis needs to do better if he wants to become part of a big three (with Messi and Ronaldo). Lucas and Mustafi had tough debuts but were not helped by head down Ox who had some great touches but some awful ones too. Theo was active but not good and had some good moments with Bellerin who also wasn’t quite sharp enough with final balls. Men of the match were Kos and Santi but we also have to thank Shane Long for lack of clinical striking which kept us in it. The three points allows us to move on, thankfully…

  113. njk84sg says:

Back from Down Under last night local time. Brilliantly huge country i must say.

Caught the highlights and I must say that we are really lucky to have gotten the penalty. It looks like a 50-50, but Ollie had his shirt tugged just before he tripped so you can say the penalty is for the shirt tugging, but to So’ton it is very cruel.

Ox had a bad game, and we should play Ollie upfront with Perez and Alexis running the wings.

It was another case of same-old-same-old, but to be serious it is a given to play better against PSG next week.

We have holidays tomorrow here, so good to have an extra day of rest before returning to work.

  114. Gerry says:

Okay then. I am fresh from watching the whole match ‘live’ on the ‘Player. It is 8.08 in the morning. No time to read any of the above comments, so this only my reflections of the match.

Overview: They will be better in time.

However, the first half showing was not just a lack of understanding between the players that made it a difficult watch.
Sadly, our magician with the key passes had a poor half given his high level of play that he normally produces.
Southampton were strong both in defence and attack on their right. This made it difficult for both Monreal defending, and Oxlade-Chamberlain in attack. But both worked extremely hard.
Inexplicably, we chose to attack down our left for the vast majority of the time. Both Cazorla and Ozil would turn play back from right centre midfield and go back to the left side. Thus making Walcott pretty redundant, and Bellerin unemployed with forward runs.
Up front I can excuse Perez for much that went on, with Ozil’s touch being off, and Ox undoing any good work he did with poor passing. Frustrating for him, and everyone else. The shining light of the first half, in midfield was Coquelin. He seem to take on the Santi and Mesut roles, and do more than those two combined. Largely unrewarded because of the Saints well drilled defence. Both goals needed luck. Theirs for the ball coming down at a quicker rate than Cech, giving him no time to react. Ours because the brilliantly executed bycycle kick by Kos, which very nearly caught the face of one of the two defenders closing him down, and as such, could have easily been ruled as dangerous play, before the ball reached the net.
    Good points:
Mustafi and Koscielny look a good partnership in the making. The former’s loose passing early on disappeared as the game wore on.
And, strangely, given what I have reported above, the fluidity between players going forwards, and defending, worked well, as there always seemed to be players in good positions when the game switch from attack to defence, and vice versa. Another day, another time, with all players on top of their game, we will win handsomely, even against well drilled defences.

    Second half:
Saints made one change, we stayed the same. Yet the difference was immediate. We attacked down our right and the game opened up. When we switched play we had better openings down the left too. Amazing what a bit of sideline observation from AW can make to the team?
However we were still struggling to get the ball into the net. Although Alexis was very lively when he came on with Giroud, it was still a struggle against the Saint’s defensive block. They too were more dangerous with Long coming on, as frequent counter attacks were thwarted by good defending or poor finishing.
The game was only settled late on by the penalty .
Now I saw them discussing this in real time on BT Sport live show. They made no mention of Kos lying injured , only that it was a poor decision. Even Howard Webb said it was not a penalty.
However I think they are all wrong because they are looking at the wrong reason for it, imo naturally.
Looking at the replays, two angles show that the shirt pull was not held in a way that prevented Giroud from playing the ball to any great extent. But take a long, slow look at the replay from the righthand side linesman’s view, when both players are on the ground …. Giroud attempts to get up when the ball is still in play, and Fonte raises his leg and brings him down again. The ref is looking at the whole incident but does not blow for the initial shirt holding. Hence, correct decision.

If this was a ‘Cup game, getting a winning penalty in injury time, people would start to think it had our name on it??? I wonder …
My prediction for Southampton is they will be the draw kings of the PL. Very strong in defence, not quite strong enough in attack.

Sorry if this cuts across what has been said above, but I am late for dog walking, cheers.

  115. allezkev says:

I watched MotD on TV and didn’t really learn much as the highlights were so short…

Is it a sign of the times, but the three ex-professional footballers presenting MotD – all ex-strikers, suggested that the penalty was harsh?!
Fonte had grabbed a handful of Girouds shirt and was tugging him, it was clear, so when did that not become a foul..?

  116. Pony Eye says:

It was a win, but we have to get better quickly. Our front three Perez, Ox, and Walcott are ‘straight line’ (direct) footballers ie their main strength is running at pace with the ball. To have all three playing togethet when teams are sitting deep against us is utilizing their assets very poorly which in summation can only drag the overall performance of the team down.

Imo, one ‘straight line’ player or non at all is what should be accomodated in our team when playing against BPTs.

For our front three players, in matches against BPTs, at least 2 of them should be selected from Alexis, Giroud, Iwobi, Ramsey, Carzola and at most one player from the ‘straight line’ players of Walcott, Perez, and Oxlade.

Our typical front three can therefore be:
    1) Alexis — Giroud — Walcott OR
    2) Iwobi —- Alexis —-Perez OR
    3) Alexis—– Perez —- Ramsey etc

Each front three contains only one ‘straight line” player.

Against the bigger teams especially with us playing away, 2 ‘straight line’ players could be used. Left alone I will never employ 3 direct players at the same time. We are a possession based team that thrives on creative passers and that aspect should never be over sacificed for speed.

Bottom line. We got our 3 pts yesterday. We strategize further on how to maximise our huge potentials and battle on. This season is shaping up as one hell of a battle.

Yes, I have just read the running commentaries which more or less agreed with my view.

Kev, don’t ever expect highlights to show any more that what they want to show. I had an advantage when watching the full match I knew what was coming up, so when the penalty came along I watched every angle. I have noticed that pundits and commentators alike, when given a review of, say, a controversial challenge, they look look at what the feet are doing and not at what the knees or hips might be doing. Some go so far as to say it was a dive if the feet are not making contact.
I think it was a similar case here? They look at two players grappling and say it was harsh because only one was seemingly picked up for shirt pulling. Seeing that from two or three angles and it shows nothing to change their mind. Ergo, not a penalty?
What I saw was what gets a card for a ‘professional’ foul given every time. I haven’t had time to re-watch it, to see if Giroud had a chance to be available if the ball came his way, but the trip made sure he didn’t. I could be wrong in thinking that is what the ref thought, but he was in a perfect position to see it clearly. I don’t remember him making any gestures of shirt pulling, because Kos’s injury took priority.

PE, I think you are making very quick decisions on the type of player Perez is. New team mates, new league? That is a lot to learn, and get used to.
We all had different ideas on the starting line up, and I would have been happy to see that trio come on for the last 30 minutes, even against a PTB team, although, to be fair to Southampton, the were more well drilled at getting back, rather than just ‘sitting back’. Your post on quick transition was what was needed here, and accurate balls to the front trio might have worked better if Xhaka had played? Who knows. What we do know is it might have been a different story had Ozil put a couple of chances away, and we could be the team sitting back?
Which is why I think we can say it will be much better on another day?

I trust TA will come back with more than the one positive of 3 points, after hes sees the game in full.
