The Bergkampesque!

Here we go… Lineups:

Bate Borisov: Scherbitski; Rios, Gaiduchik, Milunovic, Polakov, Volodko, Dragun; Gordeichuk, Ivanic, Stasevich; Rodionov.

Subs: Veremko, Yablonski, Berezkin, Signevich, Tuominen. Baga, M Volodko

Arsenal: Ospina; Mustafi, Mertesacker, Holding; Nelson, Willock, Elneny, Maitland-Niles, Wilshere; Walcott, Giroud.

Subs: Macey, Dasilva, Gilmour, McGuane, Dragomir, Akpom, Nketiah.

Elneny, playing 3 matches in a row is our anchor again.  Otherwise it’s 9 changes from the Monday night win vs West Brom.  (Mustafi goes again, but this time on the right side, perhaps, the BFG playing middle-middle…)  Willock is the biggest surprise.  Will he or Maitland-Niles play in the center of the pitch?  We shall see…

And, it’s another chance to see if Jack is Back…

Please join us in the comments as I try to describe the action.

  • From the official website… Cheers Goonereris…

    THE OPPOSITION

BATE are a good technical side, capable of long periods of possession play while also offering a counter-attacking threat. Mikhail Gordeichuk, who starts on the right flank, tops the goalscoring charts in Belarus.

Montenegro international Mirko Ivanic, who wears the No 10 shirt, is a creative, intelligent and two-footed playmaker who assisted Nikolai Signevich’s headed equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Red Star Belgrade with a lovely right-wing cross.

  • Pictures of some hard-core Gooners who made the trip… Or are they from Minsk and just love our club?…

Nice tunnel, it appears and a pretty cool looking roof-line on the stadium…

That guy who does the youngsters hair has a real, er, method to his madness…

  • More than decent line up. A light sandwich, with an experienced defence and attack and a fluffy light midfield. Big tasks for Melneny to keep it all ticking over. COYGs!!

  • Looks like Willock and Elneny are the MF anchors with Jack in the position that matches his shirt number…

  • Nice TA… I do kinda hate to hear about you away from family too much…

Arsenal on the front foot… Which means Bate get to play on the break…

Nelson, following his own heavy touch, gets called by the (so far) very whistle-y ref…

  • Yeah, that kit isn’t bad… Clearly the club is trying out some “softer” colors (colours…) this season…

Bate have a bit of possession but we look comfy before they hoof it out of play…

  • Mustafi tries a longer quick pass to Nelson… Doesn’t quite come off…

Ooooh Theo off the post after a nice tight throughball from Jack… Looked a goal there…

  • Seventeenho, I keep thinking they will let me go now but keep asking for more… and I keep thinking about the day rate 🙂

Wow superb attack. Sex on grass.

  • That should count as half a goal…

Nelson is playing some tricky touches early…his cross however is too strong…

    THERE IT IS… THEO!!! 1-NIL

  • All Jack pushing up and making a nice lofty little cross… Keeper might’ve done better with Theo’s central tap… The 2nd on the rebound was unmissable…

  • After that early miss off the post after a flowing move involving Nelson, Jack and Theo, Theo gets the first goal. I feel we need to turn on the screws now the hosts are looking shell shocked, rather than slow things down. These guys won’t be playing on Sunday, anyway, so nothing to lose going all out.

  • FK from Theo deep on the left is well over-hit… Too much adrenaline after the early goal?…

  • Yeah. giroud was involved too. Willock is playing without fear; I like that in the young man.

  • Looks like that’s exactly what they’re doing, ‘Eris… We’re improving at balancing attack with the 3 at the back formation, IMO…

  • Hey J… I only got 10 of 11 but that was my max… Should have known Willock would play, given his big involvement in pre-season…

  • Bate already thinking about keeping the score-line down?… Commentators noting the nice stadium and pitch being a boon for us…

Oooh, another nice sequence but another Theo offside…Giroud, to Jack to Theo again…

  • I like the main commentator tonight… The American guy (Alexi Lawless sp?…) is nothing but poo…

  • Hmmm. Looked to me like Theo was 2 yds off (as was Giroud, but out of the play…)

  • Another example of Jacks skill that should be on all highlights for days.. but wont be, because wrongly disallowed. At least we’ll remember it.

  • I won’t make much of that sentiment (keeping score line down). They will come out in the 2nd half stronger. There is more to this team than what we’ve seen so far. They beat Bayern here last season in CL group stage.

And as I type that…. they rattle our goal area.

  • Not so good there…Bate player gets by Mustafi and crosses well and Holding, clears with his thigh into a central area…The returned volley is good by just wide… Ospina probably would’ve saved it however…

  • Interesting, Eris… Another reason Ancelloti got the sack?

    There’s # 2!!!

    Theo on a hat-trick now…

  • The keeper rightly punished for just about the worst kick-out I’ve ever seen…

  • Theo seems hungry tonight hence his straying offside too often. Good strike by him for his second of the night. We need to make our dominance count in number of goals scored tonight.

That 100th goal for Giroud has to come tonight, hopefully. As I type, he misses a chance from a good tackle denying him a tap in.

  • Now the youngsters should reign it in and prove they can play at least 60-70 mins of quality football if not the full ninety…

OK, J… THAT was a nice one… Bate need to clue in on that left foot…

    WOW, THAT’S THREE!!!

  • Rob Holding makes it 3. Okay, I now will settle down to watch the game. Can’t type and watch as 17 can. Lol.

  • Great to watch and Jack is on fire. I think their defending however shows the difference between the Europa league and the champions league. Whoops another one.

The BATE boss isn’t a happy looking bunny

  • Jack = genius. Soon fans will demand to see him in premier league matches.. even the media will. I just want him to stay fit before i start pushing for that..

  • BATE pull one back… Elneny needed a bit more hair there…Or a decent jump… Nice header and Ospina can’t get to it…

  • Well worked goal by the hosts. Not sure role Elneny played in putting off Ospina to fail to save the header. They will pick up steam now so we need to silence them a bit with another goal.

  • J… I think Jack will get his chances in the league… Gotta rest Ozil to help negotiate his contract and keep him fresh for 2018… Indeed, staying healthy is key… There’s a lot less space near the top of the box in England, however…

  • OUR KEEPER IS BETTER THAN THEIRS…

Offside, however, from the FK, wouldn’t have counted…

    This is fun stuff…

  • There’s a scary tackle on Jack… 😮

But he’s right back up and slicing through with Giroud on a 1-2… pops onto his hand however…

Other end we’re looking a bit leaky… Ospina involved again

  • Giroud, beastly near their box but the defender ultimately gets it out for a throw…

    AMN earns us a corner…

  • OK, their keeper, still shaky with a punch but is able to hold onto a not very strong Giroud header…

  • True about the parked buses in England 17, many arrivals from elsewhere have seen that the hard way, but at least jack is accustomed to it…. But dont forget, Wilshere has an excellent long shot also.

  • Could the game BE more open?…seems like the pitch is double sized… Ugh, another tough tackle on Jack… He moved away from it just a bit so maybe he’s learned from his past mistakes…

  • Nice defending by Willock as Bate push it forward…

Keeper is (barely) getting his feet under himself with another punch…

Nice ball over the top from Elneny…

Jack IS loving the space…and the nice pitch tonight…

  • Agreed, J… It always helps to be a left footer, esp. early in matches before the defenders remember and adjust…

Uh Oh, Willock gets a strong fist to his face…

  • That free kick of the foul call on Holding’s tackle was dodgy, to say the least. He got the ball and only the opponent’s momentum caused any contact. What’s going on here?

  • Jack did some intricate defending before the Willock incident… Where’s the card… Bate actually get the foul!!! WTF!!!

  • Good thing, Willock is okay.. Giroud seems envious Theo is getting all the best shots at goal. Hahaha!

  • Theo looked just fine there, TA… Nice work by Jack but a lucky bounce to Theo on the intercepted pass…

ANOTHER POST on a scrambled corner…

  • We’re scaring the poop out of them on the well delivered corners… Give Theo some props on those, please…

  • Yes, Eris… Nice punning by the gaffer (TA) and Giroud MUST be due a chance or two… (That’s me trying to be the poet as the half–which flew by–is whistled… Won’t need that final espresso today…

  • Time flies when you’re having fun, retsub1. Bet the players left behind will be glancing at their TVs with envy, wishing they could have such a game.

  • Superb first half of the first half with Jack doing his magic and good running in and around the box by the others. You got to love these games. Would like to see a bit more from our youngsters with their final touches as Ollie, Theo, Jack and Elneny are running the show.

  • It’s fun stuff but we can tighten up between the MF and back lines… Not as much as they need to but still seems the major adjustment needed… Still learning the 3 at the back but it continues to improve, IMO…

Our clean sheet streak ends at 3… Still only conceded 2 goals in our last 11 halves…

  • The presence of the younger guys probably lead to a bit more of a break-neck pace… It’ll be interesting to see if we try to slow it down or if the teenagers look as fresh after the break…

  • 17, it doesn’t come up much, but Theo really doesnt get enough credit in general. Not a superstar, but very productive in terms of goals and assists for minutes played, and a great option to have on the bench.

  • Mustafi can sure play a forward pass… Always helpful to maintain defensive positioning… Still has a lot to learn about when to stay up vs going down in the tackle but I’m sure glad we kept him… Better long term prospect, I think, than Vermaelen, for example…

  • Agreed J… Theo’s “threat” (something most observers can’t see) is not appreciated, IMO… Lacazette is surely better with the ball–but they’re not that far apart as finishers with the right foot. Of course, I hope to see a lot more Laca, but that’s my assessment so far…

  • Elneny’s game makes playing the full 90 simple as pie, IMO, TA… Getting Jack off after 60-70 makes sense however, and, ideally, Willock and the wingbacks can slow down Bate’s counters so that Mustafi isn’t too stressed if he has to play the full 90… Sorry, but I don’t know too much about many of the bench players…

  • I know you think I am being a bit harsh on Theo, and I admit I was a bit earlier. The thing is that he seldom seems to live the game, as in being in the game when it matters. This is hard to explain but I don’t like it in a player. Had the same feeling with Bendtner and that small Russian fellow..

  • Selling sand to the Arabs is probably not politically correct but it’s exactly what he did with the early sales to Man City…

Speaking of good sales… Has the Ox played at Pool–beyond easing them out of the league cup?… (Sorry Ox fans… Seems like pretty good business thus far… The guy we got in–nobody–has done pretty much the better job, IMO…)

  • Good point re: the ref and subs, TA… re: Theo, his game makes him a bit of flat-track bully…which seems pretty ideal for his role this season… Should be a good competition between him and Giroud this season…

REF STEPS UP… Gives yellow and a pen…

    Giroud converts nicely… 4-1

  • Frankly, not sure what happened there but happy for Giroud to get his 100th goal for the club. About time.

  • Indeed, TA… The only group you can make fun of are the white people… Which explains why they turn into Nazis or something…

  • Great game.. Walcott is back.. And he will score more.. one more at least..
If we keep playing the high tempo as first half.. I think it will end 5-1 or more..

Happy for the kid.. and I like to watch Dragomir and Nketiah..

TA, don’t worry about Wilshere and Elneny.. with Ozil back.. They will rest a lot.. hehehe..

  • Very soft foul on a very poor Theo FK…

Through again, Theo can’t chip it in with his chocolate (left) foot…

No fair in the super-sub competition if Ollie gets to take all the pens… 100 is a nice round number isn’t it…

  • Hi Henry… Nice to have a little crowd watching tonight… Thursday is the new Friday?… 😀

  • The ref is consistently poor, you have to give him that.
Seventeenho, the joke is to do with geography and geology but I will check whether I was politically incorrect my friend.

  • Whoa… Nice FK and Ospina is unsighted but gets his arms to it… I think it did glance off a Bate player…

  • No no, TA… I wouldn’t worry about it… And my riposte about Nazis is probably a good deal worse…

  • I always worry about Giroud when he goes down and doesn’t do the finger waving thing… 😮

  • Good position by the BFG so the looped header–on target–is super easy for Ospina… As is the next one… We’re a bit confused defensively… Which is less of a problem when you’ve already scored 4…

  • Very nice attack from Bate, but we’ve got too many bodies in the way of the open shot…

  • Nice turn by Theo wins a FK and a yellow for the grabby guy… Jack to take it…

  • I meant to add a smiley there, just not sure which one…

Time for some subs and trying to work in some more defensively minded youngsters… Who that might be exactly is anybody’s guess…

Bate get a 2nd… Some tired guys out there…and some slow ones…

  • I think we need to bring on some fresh legs so we can resume our intensity. Ospina couldn’t hold onto a header and the rebound was rifled into the roof of the net.

  • “It’s not been a defensive clinic, has it.” Nice line from the commentator…

Damn, Ospina makes a nice diving punch as Bate keep coming…

  • Anybody know if we’ve got any young defenders on the bench… I’d like to see AMN move central and get somebody new in at wingback…

    Ooohh… Bate miss a (bit of a) sitter…

  • Like a Bat(e) out of hell Ospina came flying out to save us. We need to focus now and set up the team properly. We lacking focus and shape right now. We cannot sub now as the bench is too inexperienced to make a guaranteed change. Game not over yet.

  • Da Silva and McGuane for Willock and Jack, to move Maitland-Niles into the middle and Nelson forward. Theo to come off for Akpom.

  • Young boys are too tired for such an open game… Fresh (young) legs, I think, might settle things… The relative maturity of AMN central would be nice…

    Giroud wins a corner…

  • We need some quick footed player (s) to keep them back a bit. Akpom and Nelson can do so. But, I know that won’t happen. Not Wenger’s style.

  • Another Bate throughball but the tough angled shot is well covered by Ospina… Totally end to end stuff means a lot of meters being covered by guys who were maybe too eager early on…

  • OK, the sub has a different haircut… That I can manage…

Giroud screws out his attempt at #101…

  • Giroud looks tired. Should come off for a breather so we can just focus on holding what we have.

  • The sub, if he comes on, I should have said… Has a different haircut… Who exactly will it be?…

Elneny stands tall to make Bate start again…

    Nelson off for Marcus McGuane?…

  • New guy nips in.. Can’t really see the hair cuts and (absolutely) don’t know the shirt numbers…

  • Theo thought he was offside (and probably was) but you gotta play to the whistle… Ended up with a shot-cross…

  • Young guys playing some heavy touches but the old guys know how to block them off with their bodies… Willock however gets through to take a (blocked) shot…Bate work it down for a good chance on the cross and win a corner…

Gotta give them credit for continuing to play.

Willock picks a ball of a Bate defender in the box…still a little in those young legs… Giroud, whattadive…slows it down a bit, however…

  • Willock out and and Nketiah takes his spot… Not as hard to gas Szczesny but not too easy either…

We could use the whistle, sooner than later…

  • It seemed like Jack chose to stay forward and the lines between attack and MF just got bigger and bigger… People complain (too much, IMO) about attackers failing to defend but, with a lead–and a game Sunday at noon–I think it’s the right choice…

  • Indeed, TA… Thanks for the chat… Likewise to everybody else… Pretty fun stuff even if we got leggy as the match went on. Some teenagers will have fun on the plane then sleep very, very well…

  • Nice work-out for the boys who don’t get to play too often; and that fact showed as we held on towards the end. Mainland-Niles and Nelson didn’t do too badly despite the apprehension you perceived from the fan base, when the team sheet was out.

Jack will get some game time in the league, with the quality of the next 5 fixtures we have coming we have coming. Elneny is proving to be a useful man to have around. To think there were rumours of a bid from Leicester and another foreign clubside. Theo just needs to play a few more games to get back to some level of sharpness.

  • Time for some lunch then I (probably) need to accomplish something this afternoon… 😦

    Have fun fellas…and thanks again…

  • Eris, I was and am sure, that if El Neny was going to be sold, we were buying another midfielder. Not sure who it would’ve been. Almost selling Jack (maybe witha buyback? ) is another question. If Wenger was considering it, I was sure there was something that he knew regarding his fitness. But I myself am ride or die with Wilshere.

  • “Speaking of good sales… Has the Ox played at Pool–beyond easing them out of the league cup?… (Sorry Ox fans… Seems like pretty good business thus far… The guy we got in–nobody–has done pretty much the better job, IMO…)”

I was sparring elsewhere with some ‘Pool fans about a week ago– and paraphrased Douglas Adams/Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy– regarding Ox:

“So long and thanks for all the cash…”

    jw1

  • Good line jw.
I don’t understand what ox was thinking regarding playing opportunities. He would have had to go to a weaker squad to get a chance in mf … or definite time as a wing back. But probably to big an ego for a smaller club.., as it is, his celeb girlfriend isnt happy about the relocation. Ouch.
I’m just relieved that he didnt leave for free.

  • Great fighting win. Wasn’t pretty at all but it is a win nonetheless.

Have to watch the repeat of the full match to do any form of conclusion. But one thing to take away from the live blog: Jack is back, and bigger than before.

    Onward to Sunday.

  • I think there is a good chance the Ox has shot himself in the foot. He spent years trying to establish himself at Arsenal and was finally beginning to deliver. Liverpool have a glut of good midfielders but are seriously lacking a goal scoring forward. If he had stuck around he would have had the chance to prove himself on s much higher salary. Pretty dumb if you ask me

  • Retsub1, the thing is if he stayed he would have been a burden to the club, and Wenger does not know where to play him.

Now he has shown to the Liv fans that their management did something dumb by buying him. I am not mincing my words here. He can be good at times, but his play is even more selfish than Alexis, and he certainly showed that in their League Cup defeat.

Yesterday Willock showed that he can be up for the challenge, and AMN played better. But, what was the defense doing yesterday? We were caught napping at times and it is quite scary to see that. We need to be better than that and although espn wrote that we were overconfident in the end, I do not see it as that. We just wanted to save some energy, and we did not expect the opponents to be playing quite well for the full 90 minutes, which they clearly did.

3000 miles is like travelling from Singapore to Thailand and back. Not a short flight, but not too long too, and good thing that we won the game yesterday.

  • Hi all..
Yes, we win against the Bate-man..
They playing like a batch of bats.. flying all over the field.. here and there.. hehehe..
But we kill the bats with our young guns.. hehehehehe..
Our youngsters keep us proud.. Strong and Speedy.. with Walcott in front.. they almost make Giroud unseen.. hehehehe..
That’s 100 goals.. seem a charity or a sacrifice from Walcott.. Great attitude.. hehehehe..

  • “The only group you can make fun of are the white people… Which explains why they turn into Nazis or something…”

Hopefully it’s just a tongue-in-cheek thing, 17. The real Nazis were white people, most opression was commited by white people and most neo-Nazis today use the argument of “opressed” white people to promote their ideas. “They don’t attack Jews/black people/homosexuals, they just defend white people from them.” Kroenke might agree with that crap (after all, he did donate a million to his buddy Trump) but I will never accept it.

    Anyway…

Arsenal look well right now. Youngsters play and participate in winning games, fringe players use their minutes wisely and things go just fine. If only Debuchy was found alive to give more options to Wenger for our RWB position/Sagna got a short-term contract, it would be excellent.

  • Hi Admir… Trust me, the Neo-Nazi movement scares the crap out of me, partly because my mother and her family had to leave Germany in the 1930s due to it, so I’m in complete agreement with what you put so well. As you say, this is the excuse that is used: that whites are under attack. (Also, I didn’t know that Kroenke donated to Trump but it doesn’t surprise me.) I shouldn’t have written what I did (even if it was tongue-in-cheek)… It’s hard for me not to let it slip in (disgusted as I am by it all), but I need to avoid the politics. Sorry…

Otherwise, I agree with your take on the team and think we’ve got a nice chance for a good balance between rotation, rest and results due to playing in the Europa League vs the CL (see previous post). Finally, I love the idea of getting Sagna bac(k) and have suggested it myself. Playing Reiss Nelson over there is fun, but I’m not sure he’s ready for steady work (in that position) in the PL. Once again, it begs the question about why the Ox needed out as badly as he did…

Sorry Retsub, but I haven’t seen your e-mail… My laptop finally gave up the ghost so I’m trying to switch over to an underused unit we have here at the house, which could be part of the problem.

  • What is the story with Debuchy ? I like the Sagna idea but only if its short term, he can play cb, (not wingback) give a bit of cover there. I like that Reiss Nelson is getting some defensive work in at wb. Could turn into more playing opportunities for him.

  • Anybody around?… I’m up early this morning–but not as early as I’ll need to be if I want to see tomorrow’s match–but I guess I still missed all the Totts goals… They seem to be doing pretty well…at least when they don’t have to play at the big stadium…

Anyhow, it sounds like TA might have a match preview coming–with some added insight from the Retsubster–which seems a good thing. (And, in fact, I need to figure out my new–for me–laptop before I’ll be able to post anything new.) To me, the team more or less picks itself and it’ll be another chance to see if we can find that good balance between attack and the work at the back. I know I’ll be trying to watch Xhaka a bit more closely but it should be easy, what with him playing in slo-mo and all that… 😀

In other news… Arseblog this a.m. wrote a pretty good one about our ownership issues. Fact of the matter is that management, even if it occasionally makes a few missteps, works at the behest of the owner, which, to me at least, means it (management) has been overachieving pretty consistently for quite a long time. That said, I’m fairly concerned about what lies in store for our club. Playing in the Europa league seems an opportunity to forge a smaller (and more cohesive) squad which might offer some good competition for places. If a younger player (or someone on the fringes) can make a mark, they can reap the rewards of our strong salary ladder, the place where our (relatively) strong finances are being used the most… On the other hand, it’s only the Europa League and we need to get out of it (and back into the top 4) ASAP, ideally by competing near the top of the PL. I’m looking forward to watching the silly money clubs playing as the morning moves along. From what I’ve seen of Spurs at Huddersfield, they’re looking pretty well oiled too… In other words, top 4 seems a pretty big ask… I guess we’ve just gotta keep those results coming. For September, in all comps, we went 5 wins, 1 draw (and no losses) with 13 goals scored and 3 conceded. It’s really not that bad an output, but it’s also yesterday’s news. October starts tomorrow…

  • Well, I guess it’s just me… Maybe some folks to join for the later match?…

The top teams are running up some tallies here in the early season… Goal difference doesn’t seem our likely path to the championship… But… Maybe Arsenal are morphing into a defense (‘merican spelling…) first sort of team. (That would certainly be the leopard being able to change his spots…) If so, and we’re able to get single points in the games against our rivals we could be, er, OK, assuming we can win some of the home matches, and, of course, remain perfect against the bottom 14 clubs…

    Or something…

I guess when nobody else is around with the (sometimes kinda extreme, IMO…) optimism, it falls to me…

    😀

  • Dang… Nobody…

I’ve got the late match on in 4K…and, I must say… Pep’s got himself a pretty good team there… With Alexis (in January?…) they ought to be even stronger for the run-in… 😦

  • I am here 17HT hoping Chelsea sort City out. I am seriously worried that City could go the season unbeaten. It’s not often I support Chelsea, but I will make an exception today.

Xhaka is an interesting one. As you know I was quite critical of him last season. Towards the end of the season he really started to look the part, spraying the ball around the pitch. He is not the quickest player that’s for sure. The problem I have had with him this season is his passing has been sloppy. In each of the first three games, his poor passing cost us goals and we simply can’t afford to have that luxury.

The insight you referred to, is in fact provided by a Brighton supporting friend of mine and it’s a pretty honest evaluation of his team.

From what I have read Kroenke having sole ownership would not be a good thing. He would have the power to delist the shares and have total control. I think us supporters should have a whip round and buy them out. I am good for £20 lol.

  • 17HT I thought you were looking for company? I wonder if Alexis would get into this City team. He is a great player but he does lose the ball a lot and this City team doesnt

  • (Hey HT! Been working till just now.)

    retsub1–
I’d had the same thought about Alexis– going to City. His style runs counter to flowing team football. Felt it was one of the reasons Barca allowed him to go too.

I appreciate him as a one-man-band. His stats last season were just incredible. But teammates didn’t thrive with him.
If Giroud/Alexis were more like Giroud/Griezmann?
With Sanchez taking held-up balls and headers and flicks for short-range chances?
Getting the ball in dangerous spots– where he’s most lethal?
    But alas…
So– I’d really like to see Giroud and Lacazette paired up top.

At City– they have Kevin De Bruyne– a guy who does similar things– seemingly always opportune, in the right place, motor always running. But selfless.

I’ve played on teams in a variety of sports– where the team was better than the star– and also where the star was better than the team. This is– IMHO, one of those odd paradoxes, where the star is keeping his team from realizing full potential.

    jw1

  • Great stuff, JW. I reckon De Bruine is a sublime player, one of the best the PL ever. And yes, he is a selfless player who works for the team from start to finish.
