Live Blog Arsenal-Manchester United. Lacazette’s Miracle Recovery Sees Gunners’ Best Eleven Take the Pitch

Against Mourinho’s Typically Conservative Team.

In midweek Lacazette suffered a brutal “Weng-jury,” In other words, our manager rested him after 45 minutes vs Huddersfield Town.

Perhaps our new man was in on the plan?

The teams:

It’s a big one for sure, but we can do it.  Please join us in the comments as we try and describe the action.

Go on then…

  • We saw Matic (and Kante) nullified in the FA Cup final in May from stellar play by Ramsey and Xhaka. Matic too, has been (actually!) injured. This one could depend on which Pogba shows up.

    jw1

  • We’re off…

Long ball that fell to Alexis lost to Pogba… Kola hits a good ball but Laca backs away and Alexis and Rambo are miles away…

  • United get the first corner…Young off Kos…

Delivery is over everybody and scuffs off Pogba’s almost-as-bad hair…

  • Kos defends well, Bellerin’s ball to Ozil is well turned but we lose it quickly and Xhaka gets a whistle…

  • Uh-oh… Kos does terribly with a pass… Valencia and Pogba exchange passes and there goes the clean sheet through Cech’s legs…

nil-1 This could now be quite difficult…

  • Well, somehow we need to regroup and get on top of the match without getting leaky on the counter…

United happy to give us the ball and stay back…

Alexis barely tapped by Smalling but wins a FK… in a good spot…

  • Ozil sets up Kola for a hard cross but it finds a defender instead of Lacazette…

  • United will sit back and let us have plenty of the ball…

2-nil… Woeful giveaway by Mustafi and we are punished by Lingard…

    A mountain now…

  • Mustafi adds injury to insult?… First sub gone? Switch to 442 with Iwobi coming on…

  • We’re screwed here… At least there’s a lot of time…

Kos gives it away again but no harm this time…

Rambo pass to Laca is poor…but he tackles well to get it back…

  • Geez…Kos getting into a CF position with just 10 on the pitch… Iwobi finally on w/o a proper warm-up…

  • There’s plenty of energy on Arsenal’s part in possession and reclaiming the ball.

    jw1

  • Maybe the same aggressive defending we’ve been praising vs weaker teams has come back to bite us.

  • Gotta say, the two counter goals were played as well by United as they were poorly by us…

  • Not aggressive defending Johnnie so much as trying too much with passes out of the back, IMO.

Corner won but United break from it… Lukaku gets a cross in but we head it clear… No chance to break with their defense well-massed…

  • OK, gotta turn off Lee Dixon talking about how shite we are… Silence is golden

United break again but Ashley Young after handballing down, has his shot blocked at the point. This time we do break but Iwobi’s cross only hit’s Laca and it eventually bounces clear for a corner…

  • OOooohh… That was a real chance but Laca can only get the sole of his boot to it and De Gea is able to clear it…

  • Cleared and Rambo tries to blast it in but it’s going wide and Laca’s attempt at redirecting lands on the top of the net…

  • Laca chips Ramsey’s shot from 18 just over the crossbar after another poor ManU clearance.

    jw1

  • I was under the impression if you try to strangle a guy about to shoot it’s a penalty.. if he is the last defender he should be sent off. Take a look at the Roco tackle on Lacazette.

  • OK, we’re playing again… And, clearly we’re gonna try and get back in the match… The next goal and there will be more, I think, is critical…

  • United happy to defend all night long… Rambo can’t slide-rule into Bells…

  • Arsenal’s front 3 are pressing hard and challenging all attempts at ManU escaping their end.

    jw1

  • I see a pattern developing here… But I like that we did the more aggressive sub…

As soon as I say that, United are off after an Alexis turnover…

  • Bellerin and Iwobi get us going but Mesut cannot find an assist… United back with it and settle for some possession after their break falters… Long ball to no one and we have it back…

Alexis is fouled again and now we’ve got a tailor made left footed FK coming…

  • Ozil’s FK is too loopy and it’s headed clear by Ashley Young sneaking back… Looked like it was probably off the post anyhow…

  • Three shots. No goals.
Laca whiffs. Recovers. bounds off the bar to Ramsey– hammered wide from 15yds.

    jw1

  • We build again with Kola and Alexis working together… Did Lacazette dummy or just whiff a toe-poke? It comes back to him and he looks sure to score but De Gea blocks onto the bar. That one falls to Xhaka but he blasts wide…

    Ughhhhh….

  • Next foray is cleared and they break… Close to a third but Cech smothers in the end…

  • Another corner but this time taken short (so they can’t counter from it?…) Nothing doing…

  • Lacazette is fast enough on a bounced away Ozil pass to win another corner… Kos rises but De Gea gets something on it… We keep it in but Ozil first timer on a Laca square pass is too central and easy for the keeper…

  • Alexis, like a terrier, gets the ball away from the wolf-hound, Pogba in the corner and Ozil squares to Iwobi who makes space to shoot but screws it wide… We’re trying hard.. Bellerin knocking Young to the turf but his pull back is to no one and he’s whistled anyhow…

  • Commentators here in the uk are saying how well United are playing. Other than two really stupid mistakes at the back, personally I think think we are all over them. It’s only when we are overcommiting they look half decent.. come on Arsenal United really are a load of crap

  • If, as you say 17– that ManU will be happy to defend– as poorly as they have?
There’s a fighting chance if the team keeps fighting.

    jw1

  • We are making a ton of pressure, JW, and it seems like it could pay off. United clogging the works are doing just enough…We just need a bounce or two our way…

Bells loses it in the corner but Xhaka cleans up with a sliding tackle into touch…

  • Laca is fighting hard…Wins a header and almost sneaks through… Corner is won but, after some good work by Kos, Rambo’s shot is blocked out for another… which is cleared… Getting close to halftime and a goal would have us right back in it…

  • Pogba looks worth all the money on the break… As does De Gea…twice…

  • Rambo too heavy trying to one-two with Ozil…

The long shots aren’t going and neither are the combos… Still promising but the half is winding down…

  • 3 mins of Wenger time… Lacazette wins a FK from near the corner of the box, left side…

  • Matic cynically trips Laca goalbound– no YC– FK
More flurries in front of ManU’s goal– no goal.

In basketball– it’s like when said– that ‘the hoop has a lid on it’.

    jw1

  • Alexis takes and De Gea makes another fine save from his own man Lukaku… It bounces around and again it looks like we could bundle it over… Lacazette does well to control the ball but his shot gets blocked…

Iwobi misplays after holding up a Kos clearance and United look like they might notch a very late 3rd… Lingard and Lukaku can’t quite connect and the half closes with us trailing by two even if we’ve had chance after chance (and corners and FKs and everything)… The two poor passes out of the back early on loom large…

  • two Stupid errors apart. If it was a boxing match the ref would have stopped it by now. We are so much better than them.

Never been prouder of s losing side. Keep it up Arsenal

  • Right there with you retsub.
If I were our lockeroom– I’d be so pumped up– I’d want to skip halftime.

    jw1

  • Rewatching their goals, i was right, our defenders, kos and mustafi in this case, were playing too loosely, and it cost us.
I usually dont yell at my tv, but these missed chances are the most frustrating i can remember in a long time. Aaaaargh.
We could easily be 2-2 or better.

  • Here we go again. Man U are so wonderful.. pardon my language but what a load of old testicles. Thanks jw1. I am really pumped up.. losing 2 – 0 at home with 15 shots at goal.

The commentator just said it again it could have been worse, Yep It could have been 10 – 2 to the good team..

mourinho is gonna bore us to death now.,

  • Didn’t see the game from the start and came on at 0-1, (to my shock) …and that must be the worst possible start for us. However, I have always felt we are the better team, despite their big money men and that has shown. We’ve been punished by two avoidable errors and it’s not reflected the balance of power.

All we need to have now is a bit more composure in front of goal. We’ve missed chances we should be putting away. It was a statement by the manager to promptly send on Iwobi the minute Mustafi came off and we were 2-0 down. Brave move as no matter how many goals we concede, it is still only 3 points at stake and not a knock out situation. It’s up to the lads not to let him down. We need to avoid conceding 3 early (conversely, a goal back will serve us better) and I am sure we can put them to the sword.

Come on, lads. We can do this!

  • If by loosely you mean too casual or not anticipating the pace of the ManU players (vs Huddersfield, Burnley and even Spurs MF) then I completely agree, Mr. J…

We ARE dominating but United could get further chances on the break… De Gea is playing brilliantly which also doesn’t help… Get the next goal and we can still get something from the match… Of course, if they do, it’s the end of times at our club…

  • …need to avoid conceding a 3rd early ** more like.

It will be hard to decide who comes off for Giroud or Welbeck, but certainly a game for a Giroud. He will trouble them and will score in a few of those situations.

  • Retsub… I turned off the commentary when Lee Dixon began slating us… and then slating us some more in that whiney voice of his…

    2nd half on…

  • retsub– I don’t yet think it’s time for Giroud– yet.
Laca has had a role in almost every attack.
His energy has been central to our chances on goal.

    jw1

  • The pattern of the match is surely set now and we have to risk 3-nil to try to get back into it…

Alexis powers down the left and pulls back nicely but his cross is well short of his target, Iwobi…

  • Robbie Earle (in studio) mimicking 17HT– that the next goal will be the YESSSSSSS– Lacazette!!!!

    jw1

  • Agreed, JW… This group needs to pull back a goal or two… The Ollie on to win it…

And there it is… ManU only playing the linesman and Rambo holds it neatly for Laca to tap in

    1-2

  • Was that the most lovely teamwork ever… Or just a Rambo mishit?…

    Frankly I don’t care…

  • Laca with icewater in his veins and De Gea right in front of him.
(Ramsey ran down the cross and one-touched to Laca.)

    jw1

  • Lukaku and Pogba are beasts…

Ozil slide rules to Kola but his pull back can only find Laca trying to hold off two defenders…

  • Surely a third from United but Cech saves from Lingard and Rambo blocks on the line after the ball bounces off the post…

Surely a 2nd from Arsenal after lots of good work but Iwobi only fires right at De Gea…

Crazy stuff but at least we’re getting a bounce our way…

  • More chances with Iwobi right at the center of things… This time he controls but his shot is skimmed over for a corner… They clear but we keep coming… Ozil almost finds Alexis but Matic does good work to clear…

  • Still we keep the pressure on…

AMAZING saves from De Gea when we look SURE to score… Laca first then Alexis on the rebound…

  • De Gea is having a blinder! No way any other keeper has kept out a few of those balls.

  • Both keepers are doing great work but that was a truly amazing pair of saves…

Ozil’s cross is too close and De Gea gathers…

  • Great ball from Bells up to Alexis who pops up on the right… He’s stomped by Rojo who (finally) gets a yellow card…

  • Ozil lofts it in but it misses our heads and is cleared out… Smalling (I think) is down… No it’s Matic…Kos nailed him…

  • Kos and Matic bang eyebrows on the FK– Matic is down on the pitch– now walking off.

    jw1

  • You can expect United to try to take the sting out of our game now; that injury break works out for them. We should be 5-2 up by now.

  • They’re replaying our goal and De Gea almost got a foot to it… I hate to say it, but he’s damn good…

  • Excellent sliding tackle by Kos and we break from it… Iwobi’s cross is headed clear and Xhaka gets whistled for the tiniest of ticks on an ankle…

    Lukaku, wrestling, also gets whistled…

    3-1

Lukaku got around Kos that time…

  • There was always going to be that risk. Pogba is just so strong on the ball in those situations. We have to keep the fight going but that leak at the back…always a possibility.

  • Pogba does a Lukaku and bodies Kos off the ball– centers to Lingard taps in– 3-1.

    jw1

  • That was Eris who wanted the 5-2, JW… It was Pogba who pushed Kos off the ball… Cech was an inch short of deflecting the cross out…

  • Sorry, J-dub… They’re both big guys… Was it Lukaku who held the ball up and got the break going?…

Alexis forces ANOTHER good save from De Gea… Replay shows it was a good height and not close enough to the post… Well struck, however…

Gotta get one quick here, I fear…

  • Laca offside after Nacho keeps Pogba’s corner clearance from setting United off on the counter again…

  • Alexis has been dangerous but keeps losing the ball to detriment. Maybe, he should be the change for Giroud? Herrera is just going to stay with Ozil now and prevent him coordinating things as he has.

  • Hererra in for Martial…

I agree JW… About the draw… The mountain got rebuilt with their goal, however…

  • Nice opportunity there but Ozil’s shot is blocked…

We come again but Laca is forced wide and can only loft a cross to no one…

There’s Ozil defending and he got the ball… Hererra too and the dive is bought… United taking their sweet time taking it…

    DW in for Xhaka…

  • Xhaka off for Welbeck. Clearly, Wenger wants to win this one, but now we have to be careful at the back.

  • Iwobi would go into the middle I think. But Bellerin will miss his support on that side.

  • Maybe Iwobi will drop a bit deeper?…

We build again and indeed Iwobi is more in the Xhaka spot… Wow… Kos all the way forward almost pulls back Bells nice pass for an own goal… Corner instead and it’s only an inch over Danny’s hair…

Bells gets yellow for Lingard’s impression of a 747…

  • Not sure Bellerin needed to go in on Young like that, but then, who knows? May be a good yellow card to take. This is one game Wenger shouldn’t be thinking of taking Laca off, in my view. I’d rather Alexis…

  • Ooops, if it’s a diver, surely it’s Young… I shoulda known better…

  • Pogba tries to cripple Bellerin and is rightly sent off… 15 mins plus stoppage to try and rescue this…

  • Pogba off. Red card for a studs on challenge on Bells. JM has the excuse he needs now to park the bus. Good thing we can turn to Giroud. All hands to the pump for United now…and for us.

  • Down to 10 we probably don’t have to worry too much about them getting a 4th…

Lingard off for Darmian… The shop (shoppe?) says closed but is it?…

  • Iwobi not quite able to cut his stride down on Alexis’ pass and can only use his right foot to play into touch…

  • Matic skies over Giroud to win a header but we keep it in… Ramsey’s cross back in is over everybody…

  • Cech has to come off his line to put a hoofed ball into touch…

    80th minute…

We’re massing bodies around and in the box… And Ramsey has time to shoot but it’s cut out… Probably needed to hit it first time…

  • Laca, with Ozil wide, opts to shoot… bounces out to Mesut but his cross is over everyone and the frustration shows…

  • Same with Welbeck settling the ball instead of turning shooting at the edge earlier.

    jw1

  • Nacho can’t wrap his foot around the cross… No, replay shows it came off an arm and softly to De Gea… The arm was tight to body, however…

  • DW shapes and shapes and finally shoots but it only bounces and De Gea is able to tap behind for an easily cleared corner…

We build again but it’s getting late… 85th minute, in fact…

DW heads over instead of down on Rambo’s angled cross…

  • Alexis, inside on his right foot is the next to have his shot blocked at the point…

Then comes Iwobi…blocked in similar fashion…

Kos gets yellow after a wrestling match with Lukaku… Probably one worth taking…

    It’s getting extremely late now… 88th min…

  • DW tripped up in the box and everyone wants a pen… He plays to the whistle (that didn’t blow) be we can’t get anything from it… Alexis gets yellow either for complaining or shoving Herrera or both…

    Not gonna happen tonight… 90th min…

  • Stonewall penalty on Welbeck, not given. How can none of the officials have seen that?
Bellerin must take responsibility at times. He’s happy to pass on things to others as he did to Cech there.
Another clear penalty shout on Laca, ignored too. What?

  • Ozil’s slid pass is too wide for Laca and all we get is a throw… Ramsey tries a similar idea but it is intercepted and United go forward, Bells getting whistled so they can use up some time…

5 mins extra but one already played…

  • Well, that’s our home record gone. United do have a way of spoiling records for most teams.

  • Eris, you really have it in for Bellerin… Seemed to me that he got his body in between. Better to have it with the keeper than into touch or behind, I think…

Some good work but Rambo blasts into Row Z from Ozil’s cushioned pass… Took it first time at least but didn’t let it drop far enough…

  • One last try but our break slows with a slow pass from Laca to Ozil… Later, the latter (that was at least fun to write) tries to loft a ball but it’s cleared… As is another one… And another, though its recipient Nacho is flagged off…

    Gonna finish 3-1

  • Now it’s all about the handshake… This is a tough one to take but they were clinical on the break and De Gea played about the best game I’ve ever seen a keeper have… Pogba shoved Kos on their 3rd, Welb’s cutback looked a sure pen, so even harder when the ref won’t help…

A great effort by the boys, however…

  • Nothing wrong with effort– just those misplaced passes.
DeGea was simply brilliant. Cech too at times.

    jw1

  • I gotta run but this one shouldn’t make us hang our heads. Surely it’ll be Wenger out (and I wish Bellerin had gotten his leg broke and where was Jack and all the rest…) but we gave it a real go against a team that is set up to play exactly as they did and executed perfectly… 15 games in and it looks like the only team that can beat Manchester is from the same town…

Just my views, of course, and they’re no better nor worse than anyone else’s…

  • You too 17HT– nice job as per usual!

Dang. Sad to see how hard/how well we played in possession– go for naught.
The movement and passing at the top of the box was quite good. I can’t count the passes that created chances and near-chances. Against a lesser-GK this would have been a rout– or nearly.

    jw1

  • Nice job, 17.

Wonder why we have had such a poor start at the back (same group we’ve lauded for the last few games) and to think both CBs have made the errors we were punished from. As soon as Mustafi had to leave, I was concerned because he’s been some kind of lucky charm for us, with a long non-losing streak when he’s playing. Well, these things happen.

33 shots and yet no goal; with 75% possession. That was a barnstorming offensive performance and we have not lost because United were so great defensively. We’ve lost because they have a shot stopper of a keeper. We need to take the positives and return to what we have been doing: getting back to winning ways. Sad day.

  • 17 HT : Eris, you really have it in for Bellerin… Seemed to me that he got his body in between. Better to have it with the keeper than into touch or behind, I think…

I only think he can be better and expect a bit more from him, being a graduate of our academy and La Masia. It’s not just on that occasion but he is wont to pass on responsibility to the player nearest to him. He also needs to be stronger in challenges; I watch him closely, so I know what I’m speaking about.

  • Catching up and only a couple of comments?… I guess I need to go to the darker corners of the Goonersphere…

Except that I can’t take it anymore. We gave a fine performance but they executed very well–closing down shots, De Gea in goal (WOW!!) and the first two breaks for goals… Their 3rd might’ve been called back for Pogba’s upper body work on Kos and we were due a pen late on via DW… Maybe Marriner wanted to show that he’s not swayed by the home crowd. If that’s the case in the reverse fixture, I think we can play with them just fine…

Let’s be clear, however, United, like City, is a bought team. New coaches every couple of years who bring in new players no matter what the cost… AND they’re able to keep their players if they choose to. How is it that De Gea hasn’t returned to Spain? To think that they want to raid us for our two big money guys (Sanchez and Ozil)… It beggars belief, really… But hey, look at our new (US) tax plan. The rich get richer and (at least certain sectors of) the poor get blamed… (We shouldn’t cry poor, I know, but certainly we’re not as rich as the Manc clubs…)

Given all of that, I think our team looks pretty good right now, and, if they can stay focused and build upon the recent performances, I believe we can romp our way back into the CL… More fundamental changes (Kroenke reaching deep into his pockets…) will be necessary, however, to take the next step.

Too tired to argue about our great 22 year old right wing-back, Eris, but certainly I respect your observations even if I thought the play in question was reading extra into it… Another day and I’ll be back at it…

Maybe more comments when I wake up tomorrow?… I hope so…

  • Yes, we shot ourselves in the foot.
I listened to the game on the radio and all I heard was ‘great save by DeGea’ or ‘unbelievable save by DeGea’ even ‘fantastic save by DeGea’, but in truth we lost that game in the opening minutes when our two best centre-backs played defensively like park footballers. You know, it isn’t a crime, when under pressure, to go long or put it into row z…
Mourinho had seen lesser teams recently put us under pressure in similar circumstances and Arsenal get away with it. He’d see us start slowly, the difference is ManU players have the quality to take advantage.
It was never like this in the old days at the Manor Ground…

  • Even when allowing for their ‘creative’ editing the BBC couldn’t hide the fact on MotD that Arsenal should at the very least have got a draw. I thought Arsenal looked fantastic from an attacking sense, the best I’ve probably seen this season, and yes, stonewall penalty on Welbeck. On the radio they mentioned a couple of other penalty shouts but that probably didn’t suit the BBC narrative to show too many.
Mourinho was lucky, ManU were lucky, DeGea was virtually unbeatable, he would have probably saved any penalty anyway, it was his day and we’ve just gotta suck it up.

It’s how we respond from here on that’s the test of character for this group of players. If we go out and smash our next opponents and Utd lose at City then it’s as you were. Utd will miss Pogba, who should also get a four game ban after sarcastically applauding the referee as he went off.

  • Kev, United are at home, but you know City will smash them. They won’t be messing about with shots at De Gea. I want to see him put up such a performance next week. In many ways, we’ve made him look good by our inefficiency. Take that rebound from Lacazette’s shot which Alexis has placed when he should be lifting that over the keeper or smashing it into the roof of the net. We lacked composure in front of goal and were too anxious to get back into the game, forcing us to rush decisions. There was also the Xhaka curler from another blocked shot. If that had found the bottom corner, he won’t be saving it, but it went inches wide.

Interestingly, the ‘Expected goals’ (or xG) metric, that has been more prominent this season, has recorded a 5-2 win for Arsenal on the strength of the basis of its measurement of the goal mouth events of the game. Of course, it all means nothing as the most important result is the one on the score board in the end.

  • So today, City recorded a 2-1 ‘W’ from an 83′ goal (a skillful one) by DSilva.
They beat a below-average West Ham team at home with 73% possession, 24 shots/8 on goal.

Not quite De Gea-like, but Adrian made 6 saves– and gave the impression the Hammers might could hold on for the last 30-or-so minutes– when I first started to watch at 1-1. West Ham’s defenders were cohesive. But the inevitability of City scoring became just so pronounced. As the ball rarely left the final third, with City attackers in a line across the goalmouth about 12yds out. DeBruyne, and Silva, and Delph, and at times Sane– would slide a pass to one for a shot.

As City has the most money? All the best players available they truly desire? Possibly the best manager? (Certainly the best when holding advantage over every team in every league he works.)

Today? Versus West Ham– It looked like the ‘win-a-giant-stuffed-bear-contest at the fair’. As long as you’re willing to fork over the cash– you get to keep trying to win it.

Today? The ‘BEST’ team in the world was involved in a game of skill. Not unlike trying to pitch a ring onto a soft-drink bottle from 6-feet away. Today David Silva has the burden of carrying the giant stuffed bear to his car– and trudging it through the front door of his abode.

Congrats to City. Likely a stuffed bear every week.

    jw1

  • In the past a great deal has been made of how Mourinho was able to outsmart Wenger and as he seemed like he did it all the time it’s difficult to argue. But this wasn’t one of those days

Moutinho can take credit for good finishing, but the goals were handed to them on a plate.

Mourinho can take credit for a truly fantastic goalkeeping performance. I don’t think Cech did much wrong, but I wonder what would have happened if we had De Gea?

On the other hand, I thought our boys were fantastic. The ups and downs of our team, must have taken its toll over the years, because I have to admit I haven’t found this season as exciting as previous seasons. But on Saturday they played so well, I found myself yelling at the TV, the ref, the dog and any other poor sod who walked in the room.

I hate losing, even as much as I hate Manchester United, but if we have to lose, let’s do it in style as we did.

Brilliantly game, I nearly enjoyed every of it. How we didn’t score 10 I don’t know?
