Arsenal 4(!) – 0 Atletico Madrid
My four points:
1. Gyö
Monkey’s off his back, at last. How could we not be happy? He’s the kind of guy you frown upon when he’s brought into your team and you can’t believe how heavy his first touches are. But just a few minutes into the training session, you start wondering if you ever were, or ever will be, as committed, relentless, sacrificial almost as he looks already – and you know you’ve never been, and never will be. Humility always goes along with that kind of attitude on the pitch, and his reaction after his first goal will remain one of the moments of the season – as though the big lad was apologizing for breaking the deadlock in such an ugly fashion. The look of a puppy sitting right in the middle of the mess he’s turned your place into, as you come home, was priceless. As for the reactions of his mates having to cheer him up and tell him how happy and proud he should be says a lot about how much he’s loved already. At the end of the season, who will care about how scrappy his goals were anyway? We’ve had our share of scorers of great goals lately, now we can do with a great scorer of goals (famous Charlie G. quote in reverse of course). Last remark: what I loved most was how his holdup play looked improved; Le Normand is De La Fuente’s first choice CB, but our Big boy almost drove him insane – he might have needed these first weeks, games, to be fully fit, half-fitness doesn’t sit well with his style.
2. We’re through to the Ro16; we’ll get nine more points against Slavia, Brugge, Kairat, that’s 18 and that’ll do the trick.
But … there’s a huge interest this season in the very best position possible. The first four will be seeded and will play the Ro16 – Ro8 return games at home, and the fist two will even play the semi-final return in front of their fans. Which is why: first, MA will pick what he thinks to be his strongest team of the moment ’til the very last game, secondly, we might be treated to goals galore the nights of the games against the three above-mentioned teams, finally the games against Bayern and Inter are bound to be actual showdowns for that very reason, since they are direct rivals for the top-spots.

3. Set-Piece FC
There’s BigGab of course, whose reign o’er the box is so supreme it gets really funny – truth is he’s having great fun himself, on CKs he has the happy look of a doggy you can’t dribble past, who grabs the ball every time – could do it all day.
But … there’s the deliveries, too, and that’s where “A Terrible Beauty Is Born“ imo. I’ve started thinking Declan and Bukayo have been creating, inventing, a whole new skill that scouts will be demanded they are able to spot in players from now on. And guess what? We even have backups now; Martin Ø has always been quite good at steppin’ up for Bukayo when needed, but I’m pretty sure Eberechi has all it takes to do the same for Declan – it’ll just take a few personal sessions with Jover the Wizard …
4. My conclusion? Be ready, Big Ears!
North London Is Coming.

Thanks legall, that is a fine post.
All agreed re Gyo. I love a hard worker too. He knows he what he needs to do in this team, and how could his fellow Gunners not love the work and attitude his puts in every game. Never complains, just keeps going.
Agreed re Viktor needing a bit more time to get fully fit and acclimatize. He seems to have metalled up now.
Yes, finishing as high as possible matters, and I think this is not only for getting the best possible route to the semi-final/final. This set up is great for teams testing themselves in Europe, and the table that includes all teams is real fun the managers. The stadiums are full and the games are of high quality with a decent element of adventure in many of them. The smaller teams also get an opportunity to shine, and every season we seem to have one or two surprises.
Jover the Wizard! I love it.
Testing…
Just arrived in the UK, boys. The game was played while I was in the air but I’ve managed to see a replay. Some performance, reducing Simeone to that head in hands place he would rarely have experienced. Fine report, LG. Thanks.
To paraphrase that most genius of Irishmen: “What ‘tough’ beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards ‘Budapest’ to be born”.
Enjoy your time in England, Stu.
Nice read legall,
I agreed re- Gyo truly, he reminds me of a certain raw Togolese boy whom Arsene brought pre 06 World Cup in Germany, he also has all the skillset to succeed and guess what, he his not injury-prone either. Which makes it even sweeter. By the time he clicked into his second and third gear, February and March will be upon us, and we will see what a goal monster he truly is.
Unlike recent seasons when we were always afraid to take on the likes of Inter and Bayern, I say bring them on, and let’s see what stuffs they’re made of.
Clinching the top 2 spot will be crucial for our progression but I don’t really care who we meet in the later stages, to be the best, you’d have to beat the best. My take.
It is so good to be back after almost 5years hiatus.
I am Funminiyi from Nigeria.
Nice read legall,
I totally agreed re- Gyo, as he reminds me of a certain Togolese battering ram Arsene bought pre 06 World Cup in Germany, he’s got pace to burn, the physique to batter any defence, and don’t forget he never had a proper preseason with us, I believe by the time he clicked into 2nd and 3rd gear, we will be in December, January. And by then, there will be lots of distractions for our rivals in form of prioritising which Cup over what.
I read reports about Gabriel Jesus being back training on the grass, these are truly exciting times.
For our meeting with Bayern, and Inter, we have to play ro secure maximum points, times have changed and we need to beat the best to be the best.
It is good to be back after almost 5years hiatus.
I am Funminiyi from Nigeria. Aleks, and Total, I hail o.
Welcome back, delight … and thanks!
Yes welcome back Delight, and that is an interesting comparison with Adebayor. On the day he was unplayable.
We like more ex BK commenters to return!
Enjoying a superb read at the moment: “Calling the shots” David Dean’s book. Most public libraries should have it.
LG, good post and well adapted for this thread. Funny you spotted that lack of a proper celebration on his first goal (team’s 3rd), which I was a bit surprised about too. During the obligatory interview, the presenter picked on it and he responded that it was all the need to wait for the VAR verdict so as not to celebrate in vain. I suspect your view is closer to the real reason he hesitated in celebrating wildly.
With the likes of Bayern and Inter Milan waiting in the wings, there is an incentive to play for the points which will take us into the top 4 positions, top 2 even, if you ask me. Why? It will affirm our UCL pedigree over the last few years, highlighting improvements and that we do mean business. I feel we can beat both teams anyway.
I saw a meme representing Big Gab waiting for the corner kick, with some 5 opposition players trying to block his path; the presenter of the clip began to laugh hard …… like, “good luck stopping the moving train” that is our Gabby. Man is a monster charging at set pieces.
One game at a time, LeGall. OGAAT. 😁
Hey, Delight (Funminiyi). Great to have you back o. How far?
Been good sir, thank you for having me. Gracias y’all for the welcome.
Let’s nick the points again this weekend against the Eagles. C’mon Gunners!!!!
Is there a link to the meme, Eris?
Don’t know what to think about tomorrow’s game … Palace had a bad thursday night at the office, their defeat was all the more surprising since it looks like Glasner picked their best XI.
Glass half-full (for us):
They don’t have what it takes to pile up a European competition on top of the domestic ones, their legs get wobbly, doubt starts creepin’ in …
Half-empty:
They got supremely confident. They know they’ll win the phoney cup, eventually, so they treated the game like a boring training session, the opponents were unexpectedly good and once they realized it it was too late to change gear … Also they know now they can beat anyone in the league, see they got an outside (but real) chance of ending up in the top 4, so that what they had in mind already was their Sunday game against us, for which they’ll be 100% ready.
I tend to think half-empty makes more sense, so beware … MA was asked about Mateta, but to me their outstanding player is their RWB Munoz, I haven’t watched any of their games from start to finish tbh but it looks to me every time they create real danger, he’s in charge of the ignition. Whoever (Cala, Myles, or … Hincapié??) will be picked on our left flank might have not to wander about the pitch as much as usual …
Now, I’d be lying if I pretended to worry too much. The squad Berta gifted us with offers Mick so many opportunities that a …
Raya/White-Mosquera-Hincapie-LewisSkelly/Nørgaard-Merino/Martinelli-Nwaneri-Trossard/Gyö
… could get picked and I don’t think any fan would start shakin’ in his shoes out of certainty we don’t stand a chance. Moreover there’s no way our coaching staff don’t respect Glasner’s job highly, so the 5 days we had to get everything covered will have been put to good use.
Sunday will be a good day; COYG
Great comments guys. Yes, Legall, key is to not underestimate Palace at all. This will be tough again and OGAAT, as Eris reminded us again, is key.
I shall see if I can get it, Legall. We go through so much stuff these days that I can’t even remember where I saw it.

Morning Gooner-BKers, match day! Looking fwd to this one. Great opportunity to create a bit of a gap, especially if Villa can take points from Citeh.

Where are you PB? Make sure we do not only hear from you when we have lost points, hey?! 😉
New Post 🙂
Typical Arteta mind games, perhaps. Gabby starts today, obviously after proving his fitness. Mosquera will probably start in midweek so,…..
Where is Kev these days, though?
New post, Eris. 🙂
Saw it late, TA. Must have come in as I was typing. 😛
