Happy New Season Gooners

Enjoy the new season, Gooners.

High expectations, loads of promise and pressure, but remember to enjoy the journey, and don’t focus on the destination. Who knows how and where it will all end this season?

We’ll do a prediction post during the first interlull, as we will only then know what our opponents’ strengths and weaknesses are.

Come on You Rip Roaring Gunners!

  • Success is not final,
    failure is not fatal:
it is the courage to continue that counts….

  • Cheers Total, I’m watching Villa vs Newcastle and it’s 100mph which can’t last.

    Newcastle should be 2-0

  • From what I’m watching, Newcastle simply cannot afford to sell Isak this summer.

The owners should say to Isak that he will get a pay-rise but must stay one more year and then they’ll agree to release him in the summer of 2026…

A bit like Liverpool did to Luis Suarez when Arsenal tried to sign him back in the day…

  • Happy to say ‘hello’.

NUFC and AVL are middling teams this season, about to find their place in the natural order.

  • You can’t really judge a team and how they’re going to do in a season until they’ve played about 6 games.

There’s still the best part of 16 days left in this transfer window and a lot of business will be done in those two weeks.

Villa have done really well to still be in this game, Kamara looks a decent footballer.

  • Fabian Schaefer is such a smart cookie, he knows just how far to go in fouling someone without getting booked, he’s getting on now but he’s still a very good player.

  • Yeh, nice, PB. I guess “fall” can carry the secondary meaning of “autumn”.

Granite served up a reminder of his latter form for Arsenal. Looks like he still has the legs for the EPL. Kev’s transfer recommendation, Semenyo was worth the watch. As were the Aussies in their comeback v the Boks.
Doesn’t sport offer welcome distractions along our journey…

Our Kerikeri ladies face Paihia in the Bay of Islands derby this arvo.

  • A bit early in the day with 5 hours plus to go but I’m sensing a draw today and a lot of poor and controversial refereeing decisions not least from the Aussie Scouse 4th official.

10 months of enjoyment or 10 months of angst, you decide?

  • Yoh-KER-esh with the start.
    Kai knows his role.

    A team built to last.
If it fails, it’s down to individuals and circumstances.

Here for it– till the end.

    GOYG!

  • Think we have to adjudge this squad differently Total.
We’ve not had this level of depth since the mid-00s.

No longer starters and subs– but who fits the bill each week.
Berta has done his job well. Hoping for more.
If he manages to reel in Rodrygo– I’ll stop there…

  • I like that starting XI and I love that bench, Jesus to come into the mix in a few weeks time, just ready for the League Cup

  • If I had to bet right now, I’d go for Bilbao’s starting XI plus Kai
    Raya
    Timber-Saliba-Gabriel-Clafiori
    Zubimendi-Rice
    Saka-Ødegaard-Havertz
    Gyökeres
but … hard to tell, really; it’s not been like this for quite a while, and I tend to think it’s not a bad sign.
Actually, I feel strangely confident, tbh (and I know I’m giving goosebumps to the most supersititous of yous. Sorry, but I just can’t shake the feeling).
Stu’s homey is off to a great start, again, what a professional that guy is. As for Chelsea they’re struggling against a very well-organized, coherent, and full of confidence Palace. He’s been doing a great job, Glasner – and I think the Chavs rely too much on Palmer, beside him Caicedo and Fernandez are belligerent thugs, but look below top-level technical par to me …

  • Good morning, gentlemen. All quiet outside here in Kerikeri except for the odd Kiwi call in the bush behind our home. But here inside, too, quiet, soon to be punctuated by shouts of “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL”. COYG.

  • A nervy half, but I am not surprised. MU started with home hubris, and the boys did well to stay solid at the back. A bit more composure upfront and we’ll get the second goal.

  • Did you not get the impression that the ref looked long and hard for a reason not to give our goal? This is a better Manure side than last season, but our boys are looking good.

  • We give up possession, our set piece routines have evolved – but still work out just fine – we play on the break (and are a bit awkward at it, too). Our pre-season was all about “cloaking”, P. was right all along!!
Ben and Martin are themselves again, which is great to watch, otherwise we look either rusty, or like having worked too hard – our shots seriously lack weight, in particular.
That was an ugly half, but with Utd starting setup, there’s no way this could have been a classic. Beware boys, they have Diallo and Sesko on the bench, once they’re on, the change might prove dramatic.
I like what I’ve seen of Gyö, his pickings have been real slim, but he’s been a constant pebble in their back-3’s shoe, which they couldn’t get rid of – he sure deserves the opportunity he’s been longin’ for. I won’t say anything about Marti; unless he does much better after the break, I’m afraid the’ll get picked on enough tomorrow.
And hey!! Gimme 38 1-0 to the Arsenal ugly wins all day, so I might sign up for it right away, that’s the only truth I know.
    COYG

  • Kerikeri 1 Paihia o. Man Unt 0 Arsenal 1. There’s a bluebird on my shoulder, everything is satisfactory…

  • First game of the season is always like you taking the first sweet out of a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get?

ManUtd and their fans were truly up for this game, it could have easily slipped through our fingers, but it didn’t and I’ll take that.

There are some issues that Arteta has to iron out with the attack and midfield but our defence is resolute and doesn’t give an inch. The defence won us this game and in particular David Raya, they were superb despite the mayhem in our box at times.

The referee showed a degree of favouritism to the United players but not enough to swing the game – the officials will up their game at Anfield believe me!

Havertz looked good when he came on but I hope that Arteta keeps Gyokeres in the starting XI vs Leeds, Saka and Martinelli were quite subdued but Saka almost scored in added time and that’s the reason why Arteta keeps him on.

Not sure why our midfield didn’t work as well as most of us expected, I guess we have to give United credit for closing us down so quickly.

It’s a learning process and we won whilst learning, that’s the kind of process I like. Happy Days (to most)…

  • I try Total I really do.

The bench looked awesome, full of players who could come on and the level doesn’t drop, in fact in some cases it rises.

I don’t really want to see Trossard or/and Kiwior leave but I understand why it might have to happen.
