‘If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?’
William Shakespeare
Why did Mourinho go for Cesc? Why did Wenger not take him back? And why did Cesc opt for the Chavs?
Questions we all have answers to, but none of us knows the exact truth. The latest comments by the narcissistic one have all the signs of a killer whale tossing a baby seal in the air for fun, showing off to the rest of the world – and especially Wenger – what he has caught: “I think he really wanted to come to us. As you know, Arsenal had an option where they could interfere but I think he was not open to that. He was very much in our direction. It was an easy job for me.”
This is Mourinho bluffing, as he knows he will need to get the supporters behind his pivotal man. Fabregas’ statement straight after his transfer was announced made it clear to all of us that the Chavs were his second choice. This will always stand for me. I said at the time that our former captain took a big risk with that statement, and the self-celebrating one is now desperate to turn perception round; but what is done is done and eventually it will end in tears.
I have no doubt Cesc wanted to come back and I remain disappointed in Wenger for not letting him back in. And despite everything, our ex El Capitan remains one of my favourite former Gunners. But we have to move on and so does Cesc. What I am also disappointed about is that Cesc opted for the Chavs and Mourinho: a club almost hated as much as the Spuds and a manager loathed by the whole of Spain and every Gooner. I am sure there will have been personal and financial reasons for him to do so, but I never thought Cesc would have made such a devastatingly poor choice.
A once great Gunner has become the play thing of his former master’s – and second father’s – fiercest enemy. I am sure Freud would have had a lot to say about this and Shakespeare would have written a beautifully tragic play about it, if they were still alive. Ooh Cesc, what have you done?

From Cockie at end of last post:
First live one of the season Broke Backers !.
I agree with you and I’m sad AW did not bring him back. We have aging Arteta and Rosicky and other midfielders who present a mix of issues, being injury prone and Immature being just two of them…..I hope it doesn’t come back to haunt us
Another special bullshit from that mourning one.
I am sure Arsene will ignore his comments, frustrating the frustrated one again.
Attention seeker, that’s all.
Is this the same Cesc that went on strike to get his move to Barca? Also remember when playing in the Champions league against Barca back heeled the ball to a Barca player for them to score and knock us out. Cesc ex Arsenal player yes, legend never.
the poison dwarf is just trying to get the chavs on side , but why think fans are stupid ? we all know where his preference was , I like Cesc but he is no longer the player he was
Mourinho making himself look a complete tool. Again.
DITTO all of the above Well done Wenger for sticking to your principles. We Gooners like Cesc are moving into a new ERA . I wait with bated breath to see who signs next. Really looking forward to new season ,cant wait for K OFF C’MON YOU GUNNERS Lets have it Hoxton Gooner.
Very good post Total…
Mourinho is living on borrowed time, if Costa and Cesc don’t come up with the goods, he’ll be out the door.
Abramovitch is probably already looking for his replacement.
TA, I will be back to comment later but I will just say one thing. The signings Wenger have made so far haven’t justified him turning down Cesc. Only the signings of Khedira or Bender (even Vidal although this is unlike) for DM will justify Wenger’s decision. Any other signings will not as Cesc would have done a better than them in the DM position.
lets forget about cesc.. badge kissing means nothing anymore.
jose is just an attention seeker trying to get attention out of nothing.,
Nice one TA
Forget Cesc. If he wants to spend the next 4 years dressed as a Gimp in Morionios celler, its his call
My question is, Who is Morionios homosexual lover? The guys a bigger bitch than Julian Clarey.
No one behaves like that unless one day he came home form work early and found Ramon doing the dirty with Pete the Builder.
I have disagreed with Wenger on some of his decisions but for me, he is spot on with respect to Fabregas. Fabregas insulted the club and the coach with his attitude towards moving to Barca. Did he apologise? Not to my knowledge. Why dont the pro-Cesc also call for re-signinig Adebayor, Nasri or van Persie? Moreover, if Fabregas’ output isn’t on the wane. would Barca have displayed like candy on the shop window?
Joining Chelsea is the latest in the series of mistakes Fabregas has made in his career. For me, I give him 18 months at Chelsea before the likes of West Ham come knocking.
I agree with AFC. Only if we bring in a good midfielder will I say it was ok not to take cesc back.
There is a fair difference of opinion on where cesc can really be effective in position on the pitch. Maybe its as simple as Arsene only thinks of cesc in his traditional role, and doesnt like him in some of the ways we all talked about using him. We have ozil and he is basically the best in his position.
But if we dont bring in one more big signing, I will be annoyed that we let the opportunity pass on cesc, having not spent the money to get stronger elsewhere.
I agree that we must be looking at an alternative MF, in particular DM, and this is why we didn’t buy Cesc. And I too will be disappointed if we don’t buy one this TW. But if we don’t, it won’t be for lack of trying I believe – and having Fabski instead of a quality DM would be the wrong choice next TW as much as this TW; we need to take a 3 year plus view on all this. I remain hopeful that we will buy in further quality, and I think there are more players in this bracket than the 2/3 that AFC listed. Cup still half full here.
TA, fond memories of Fab for me too, but the choice of Chavs is more than disappointing in my book, and affection for the player stopped then and there.
like I said before, if Cesc really wanted to be back at Arsenal he would be .
ok, so according to CESC – AW told him that it would be hard for him to find him a place in the same team as Ozil as both play in the same position ? could it be possible that AW said, look Cesc – I won’t lie to you, I Want you back but there is COMPETITION for places, and you may find yourself in the same predicament as Barca as Ozil is ahead in the pecking order right now , if you are willing not to be first choice then let me know ? to which he was may have been advised by the agent, nah fcuk it – we are off to Chel$ea .
anything could have been said and what not – I don’t see Cesc taking to twitter and discrediting his new father (boss) – to me that suggests, that yep – it was all bullshit that either Barca or Arsenal no other club for me .
as far as I am concerned, Cesc is just another player made by AW and another opportunist in the same league as Adebayor, RVP, Nasri and so on .
the signing of Sanchez has already made up for it in more ways than one – in Sanchez, we have got ourselves a 4 in one player and at the peak of his powers as opposed to a declining player .
anyway – who needs Cesc when we have Diaby , ha
S.K.C.Ogbusu @ Hear Hear
well said and well put .
not sure why we are even wasting time on an ex player who left us many years ago, whether he plays for barca, chelsea or west ham – who the hell really cares ? the point being ” he left us many years ago to be a bit part player at first ” soon he’ll be down the mata route at the bridge , and who knows off to the MLS playing “soccer” with king Henry, ha
back to the real world – loved that Shakespeare quote !
Nice to see the boys back in action again. Coquelin and Monreal looking hungry and so good to see Aaron back in action. 🙂
Thanks for the comments, guys.
Allezkev, hope yo are right. The sooner he is gone the better.
Diaby already looking loads better than Cesc 😀 left foot right foot, you name it and the lad has got it 🙂
keeping fingers crossed for Abou and hopefully he has an injury free season .
It’s all about business from Cesc, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona. And it was smart business decision from all sides, anything else is just a sideshow.
Look Totes, you`ve got to give up on this obsession with Cesc !. I know the problem, you`re a lucky guy to have had his name tattooed on your chopper……..Francesc “Cesc” Fabregas Soler……lets change that to lucky bastard !. I`m not jealous, just because I only had “Cesc” !.
We all know he wanted Arsenal, but It wasn`t to be and as for being disappointed that he chose the extra money, lets look at another angle for this……..maybe no one else wanted to buy him !….it was rumoured Manshafter wanted him, but that was when Molest wanted him !…….I didn`t hear of any one else coming in for him, so I`m sticking with that theory !.
That was as easy as it gets and was no more than a training exercise at Boreham to Death !.
I missed the first half, but even though it was not a real contest to judge players, I still think Akpom and Olsson will be decent players and have judged them by their performances I`ve seen on Arsenal Player last season, not on todays outing, but even today you can see they are very comfortable on the ball !.
Nice tekkers !
The thought of Cesc in a Chelsea shirt makes me want to throw up. I am one of those odd supporters who hate Chelsea more than Spurs, maybe because Spurs are always a bridesmaid. That said, if as others have intimated we get a quality defensive midfielder we should be well set up for the new season.
Good to see Abou playing today, hope he stays fit for the season
on Cesc Fabregas…
I think people came out and said he wanted to go to Chelsea. I don’t know who tells the truth here or not. He landed where he wanted to go.
that was AW directly saying it
note how he says ” he landed where he WANTED to go ”
typical Cesc , I hope everyone gets to see what he really is – no more sympathy for him .
Hahaha Cockie 🙂
We will all not be able to forget about him, whether we like it, or pretend it, or not. Cesc is a superb player and now in his best years and he could have been a Gooner. Dont be surprised if he wins the Chavs the title and gets the player of the year award. And it will continue to hurt because Wenger refused him his return. Anybody believing anything else is suffering from Wengeritis hahaha 🙂
I agree with others that if we get a really good defensive midfielder we will have a strong team to compete. And I will be behind the team 100% come what may.
Yes Retsub, it was great to see Diaby again. Long may it last! 🙂
Don’t get me wrong Totes, I too wanted Cesc back and can only think that he would have added to our team, but If you asked before all that has happened, who would I have preferred to have between Cesc and Sanchez ?…..then it would be Sanchez as his position was more needing of filling, but it was an opportunity that Arsend had in the palm of his hand….we could have had both ! …..and sticking in a DM beast as well would imo have made us favourites, lets face it, it`s not as if we could not afford it !.
Currently, yes !, I agree that the chavs will be favourites for the EPL, but there is still away to go until the end of the TW and Moronho has said he is finished buying…..if we believe him !……and Arsend has said he is still looking and in the hunt !.
Put it this way….I may be The Protector of The Doomsday Chronicles !, but even I am more optimistic than I was at this stage last season !……yes, your flabber has just been gasted !…….proving that I am not all doom and gloom, just sometimes a little pessimistic !. hahaha
Cockie, I fully agree. We need the likes of Sanchez and a top DM more than we needed Fabski in our squad. That’s not to underplay his abilities in any way. And I too would have loved to see him back with us if he had been prepared to wait and fit in with our circumstances rather than his. But its not Wengeritis that is shaping this view TA, its the simple facts around where our greatest needs lie. I can’t say I wish Fabski well though, for our sake alone.
I can see where you coming from, AB. Let’s get the beast of a DM or allr quality midfielder (which IMO Cesc would have been) and take it from there. 🙂
TA, back with my response. 🙂
Cesc wanted to come back to Arsenal in my opinion. He wanted to leave Barca and was set on coming back to Arsenal, his girlfriend wanted to live in London so it all made sense. I think he thought Wenger would welcome him back but he didn’t. Then Cesc was lost. Where could he go? He wasn’t going to go to any of the Manchester clubs as City were not interested, United probably were but he didn’t want to play for a club with no CL football and a club which is currently sitting mid-table with no stable manager etc, and his girlfriend didn’t want to live in Manchester she wanted to live in London. He doesn’t want to go to Ligue l and play for the likes of PSG and Monoco in a pretty dead league, he can’t go to the Bundesliga as Bayern have no need for him and Dortmund are where we were years ago. Again his girlfriend wants to live in London.
So he had to go to Chelsea. They are a London club, have a good manager, he has a chance of winning things etc.
Cesc is human and has to put his and his family’s needs first. I’ll tell you what if Arsenal turned me down I probably would have said fuck it and gone to Chelsea. Maybe Cesc finally learned that there is no room for sentimentality in business (football)?
Mourinho signed Cesc because he is a world class midfielder. We could have made it work with Cesc but Wenger thought we couldn’t, Cesc had to go to Chelsea as he had no choice.
Siiiiiigh, TA et al
A. Great post, way to bring out the new and less frequent posters — welcome to you all!
B. How dare you quote the bard without a professor handy?!? Thine comeuppance arrives in C below where I respond regarding Cesc etc…
C. So,about Cesc. Love him as a player, and more on that below in D, but regarding his choices to first leave to Barca and then to Chavs…. I think he has made poor long term choices with all the best intentions.. Or to quote Cordelia in King Lear (a Shakespearean play about fathers and sons):
” … The road to hell is paved with good intentions. … ”
And look, where is he now…?
D. So, will he succeed? Was it a mistake on AWs part?
IMO, maybe and no. First, the no. He’d be good here but would also stifle JW completely. So, if you believe JW is a future SQ star pushing Ozil wider, then you can’t have Cesc now? I ink AW knows this too… Equally, he was expensive, and we had, and still have, other more pressing needs. Like that DM or B2B middle if we can get him…
Now, the maybe. At Barca he did well, but not great. Not, again IMO, as well as he did at Arsenal. It’s not about the trophies, but how he played and contributed. His move there was based on emotion and good intentions. His latest, I think, the same, but in the first case it went a bit wrong. At Chavs, well we will see. He will make them more attack minded than last year if only because they couldn’t be more defensive… We will see. I’m not sure Chavs, already good, will necessarily be better than last year. Different, yes, but better? Arsenal on the other hand.. We will be better, perhaps much better!!
Exciting times ahead..
E. Finally … Now having juxtaposed TAs two favorites into conflict, very king Lear and Shakespearean a move if I say so myself … Or to quote the Bard:
“… The better part of valor is discretion, …”
And I thus retreat to my flame proof shelter… Before which, as the portal shuts I remind you that until the games are actually played, all this talk is merely …
“… A walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing”
– from Macbeth
Cheers from the shelter — jgc
I missed and loved Fabregas.. before.. hehehe..
but let’s forget it.. we have Ramsey and Wilshere is his position now..
I think he missed his rivality with Ozil.. So he decided to go to Chelsea.. hahahaha..
Anybody interest with rumour about Kagawa and Isco..??
All
Speaking of morinho and thus mind games .. This quote from AW is in my mind the right way to do it…
“”I believe that Manchester United have appointed a great manager who has shown during the World Cup that he’s top quality,” he told Arsenal’s official website.
“It will certainly be difficult for us but for other competitors as well. We are all at the same level.”
Complimentary and loads the pressure on too, just a bit…. IMO van Gaál has a difficult task, tho not insurmountable, but, as before, we will see this season…
Cheers — jgc
JGC 🙂
I did not know you had sole access rights to WS. How humble of you to refer to yourself with that last quote though: takes a big man to do so! 🙂
The notion that Cesc was not a success at Barca is wrong in every sense: show me an attacking midfielder with better stats. I know a great player and Cesc is one, and you may well doubt whether he will be a success at the Chavs but bar injuries he is very likely to be the player to watch this season.
Wilshere remains a big doubt for whole season dominance in the hole position, so a Cesc return would have made sense: less pressure and real quality and hunger, and Ozil could have played regularly on the wing too.
Agreed though he made a bad choice going to the Chavs, and it will haunt us for a long while.
AFC, I can see where you are coming from; all makes sense and yet…
TA
Was I referring to just me??? 🙂 😛
As for Cesc, good stats, great ones, but not the dominance promised by potential that I think he’d have had if he stayed at Arsenal… IMO, brining back Cesc would have stymied JW but that’s talk for beer.. 🙂
Finally, the professoriat reserves all rights for its members to use and be snobby about WS when dealing with the lesser academes.. (Sniff + raised nose 😀 )

Hahaha Geoff 🙂
I must admit you used some fine quotes. They reminded me of a brilliant Don Quixote quote which I need to look up…. Something about clever words and manure hahaha 😉
“….for land that’s dry and unfruitful will give you good crops, if you put on enough manure….I mean, your grace’s words have been like manure spread on the barren ground of my dry and uncultivated mind.” Volume 2, Chapter 12, pg. 418

LOOOOOOOOL Cockie, that’s a classic quote in the making right there. 🙂
Award winning quote, Cocker! 🙂
